DADA DOWN... NOT OUT and the race continues...

When it looked like 2 teams have made it to the playoffs (Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils) a week ago, the race seems to be far from over, the least for Knight Riders. The point’s table is now extremely intriguing with 7 teams still have it in them to claim a spot in the top 4. This is probably the situation the organizers have been craving all along to sell the INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE. Well, they sold it this time.

Teams              Mat      Won     Lost     Pts        Net RR
Delhi                13        9          4          18        +0.729
Mumbai           14        9          5          18        -0.056
Knight Riders   14        8          5          17        +0.390
Chennai           15        8          6          17        +0.214
Bangalore        14        7          6          15        -0.072
Rajasthan         14        7          7          14        +0.335
Punjab             13        7          6          14        -0.270

More than anybody, the fortune of Knight Riders keeps me hooked up. Knight Riders are left to play Mumbai Indians and Pune Warriors. One victory from any of these games will seal the deal. But, imagine if they lose to Mumbai, guess who will script their fate in the play offs??? Hahahahaha. I’m dying to see the reaction of Shah Rukh Khan when DADA brings down his world crumbling. At this time, I wish to keep my emotions subtle and hopes low as disappointments are part and parcel of Indian fans life.

Chennai Super Kings are left to play their last match against Punjab. A win here confirms a spot in playoffs; a defeat is curtains for the 2 year dream run.

Mumbai Indians are left to play Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals. If they lose both these games, chances for a spot in the playoffs would turn slim. Then they can curse the negative run rate piled all along. Hope this is unlikely scenario considering their bowling resources are better than anyone else. I personally anticipate them to beat Knight Riders to confirm their status straight away and keep the tournament alive for other contenders.

Already a Himalayan climb is getting even bigger as Punjab takes on Delhi, Chennai and Delhi in the games ahead. More than making a case for themselves, their name sounds a sense of relief in the opposition camps of Delhi and Chennai.

If there is one team that is allowed to lose all their remaining games and still make a case for contention, then it is Delhi Daredevils. Thanks to their supremely higher Net Run Rate. Delhi is due to play Punjab, Bangalore and Punjab in that order. Logically they should win one out of the 3 and prospects look good in Punjab encounters.

Then the Gaylo-Bangalore is due to play Delhi and Deccan. They are most likely to win one out of these two games. Again, their bowling is found seriously wanting. Unless Dilshan and Gayle don’t turn to be serious bowling options, the likes of Zaheer Khan, Vinay Kumar, Harshal Patel are most likely to cause doomsday.

Not, but not the least, the heartthrob of this IPL - Rajasthan Royals. They are due to play Chargers and Mumbai Indians. On paper they should be able to beat Chargers and technically stand a better chance to beat Mumbai, if and only if Mumbai beat Knight Riders and take the pedal off the gas.

I wish to make my predictions and like to see how the points table ends up. Rajasthan to win remaining two, Chennai to win their last one, Delhi to win one out of 3 (against Punjab), Mumbai to win one out of two (against Knight Riders), Bangalore to win one out of two (against Delhi), Punjab to win one out of 3 (against Delhi) and Knight Riders none. In this scenario the current points table would finish something like this.

Teams              Mat      Won     Lost     Pts        Net RR
Delhi                16        10        6          20        +
Mumbai           16        10        6          20        -
Chennai           16        9          6          19        +
Royals             16        9          7          18        +
Knight Riders   16        8          7          17        +
Bangalore        16        8          7          17        -
Punjab             16        8          8          16        -

Mumbai and Rajasthan remained my favorites for top 4. Wish it stays that way. Let’s see if I have to cut a sorry figure at a later point. Hope to see DADA scripts the fate of Knight Riders. But then we also know nothing ever happens in life as we like to see.

Bottom line: A revenge to be unleashed in the DADA style.

Losing Captain.... Losing Team

I was emotionally absorbed when I wrote Winning Captain…Losing Team, a year ago featuring Sourav Ganguly. Today, with a similar turmoil, I’m writing Losing Captain, Losing Team, featuring DADA. I don’t have to reiterate the points that Ganguly was the God of Offside, Charismatic Indian captain blah blah blah. We all know it.

But, what transpired him to become the Losing Captain?
Let us put the facts first. Sourav Ganguly quit International Cricket in late 2008. Since then his appearances were restricted to his state team Bengal and his IPL teams Knight Riders & Pune Warriors. And Sourav Ganguly represented Bengal only because he wished to be in better shape and touch while representing his IPL team. Lack of International cricket rigor or the age factor whatever you wish to associate it, Ganguly’s form has been deteriorating in IPL over the years and his sides played equally poor cricket.

Again, the logic of deteriorating form may hold merit to his contemporaries like Gilchrist, Warne, Hayden, Symmonds etc. Except Gilchrist everyone else moved on or left out from IPL as they were considered (themselves or by their franchises) not bringing any value additions to their sides. But, Ganguly situation can be better associated with Warne and Gilchirst as these two players commanded respect for the leadership skills. Warne quit on his own terms after 2011 with an IPL win to his credit (2008), while Gilchrist survival till date is largely due to his leadership than just a player. This is proven, after all, Gilchrist delivered by winning IPL in 2009 (after the mayhem in 2008), also got a weak Punjab team to finish good on the Points table during 2011 edition. Probably it is the main reason Gilchrist still figures in the scheme of things to be the part Punjab for IPL 2012. Even today, I’m certain Gilly must have recuperated his hamstring injury, but delaying his arrival in the XI only because he don’t want to disturb the combination/form of the current team.

Ganguly (read the interview) rather comparing his situation with Vettori and Sangakara would be better off comparing with Gilchrist. If Ganguly is still finding a place in a franchise, it is only because of his value addition as a leader more than just a player. Obviously there are better players than Sourav Ganguly, especially in this format of the game. So, if he fails to deliver as a skipper, there is absolutely no business for Ganguly in IPL. Though the circumstances, form etc point to exit door from here, none of it still answers how he transpired to a losing captain.

Before we further analyze into it, let us revisit the situations after Ganguly era as a leader. Honestly, after Ganguly left the scene as a captain of Indian cricket, the team was mostly in shambles. After 3 years (technically 2 years) of regime with Kolkata Knight Riders, the team was still nowhere. Adding salt to the wound, his team was mostly found on the losing side too. Thanks to the Auctions of 2011, the new Knight Riders unit has progressed leaps and bounds since then. It is now fag end of the tournament for Warriors, beyond doubt the side has not moved anywhere since inception is another pity story.

Technically, Ganguly as a leader succeeded once and failed thrice. If we introspect his success, there was a John Wright, soft natured persona, prefers to play it subtle, that worked well for the tough natured and a vocal DADA. The chemistry between the combo worked great and so benefitted Team India.

If we introspect his failures, there was a Chappell with a similar persona as Ganguly, but both had headed different directions, hence the fallout. Then, there was a Shah Rukh with similar personality, but different opinions, so the fallout was inevitable. With Subrato Roy, the similar story continues. With each of the fallout, his teams were the first affected and then his loyal fans who witnessing the legends plunge. The above points explain what transpired Ganguly a losing captain.

As individual, Ganguly might relish these challenges. But India is an emotional country. The fans are always ardent. Every disturbing journey the icon undergoes, it is an emotional drench for his fans. Time Ganguly put his fans first than himself before taking future decisions. After all we are tired of the fall again.

Bottom line: A sportsman’s success is determined by his legacy. Does, Ganguly have many?

eye brow raisers!!!

During the trading window, Rajasthan Royals sold their power performer LPR Taylor to Delhi Daredevils (for handsome money I suppose). Then the owners attempted to shed some of their stakes to book serious profit. A move triggered in the assumption that IPL 2012 could bring more loss than revenue?

Pune Warriors did not participate in the auction and also did not benefit much from the trading window. But the Management wisely appointed Sourav Ganguly at the helm of affairs to lead a weak troupe. A big gamble that could pay off with Ganguly leadership else an able scapegoat nominated to take the hit? (Ganguly lead the side poorly is a different story). All will be well when Ganguly is fired for the failures.

Deccan Chargers is already a team with poor track record in the recent years. Traded the big guns like Kevin Pieterson and Pragyan Ojha in the trading window (again for handsome money I suppose). Also did not retain Rohit Sharma in the auction held in 2011. The moves intended to make revenue from the business model, rather build a team for the future? With the current Deccan squad, failures are better prospects than success, which it proved to be. Probably the reason Deccan had multiple home grounds as Hyderabad, Vizag and Cuttack compared to any other team in IPL. Each of these stadiums hosting 3 matches on average should be good enough to lure crowd to take glimpse of the visiting stars if not to cheer the home team. Did the strategy payoff?

Ganguly not in good terms with Chappell lead to his exit from Team India. Again, poor terms with former owner Shah Rukh Khan lead to his exit from Knight Riders. Good or bad terms, exit (player and captain) is pretty much on cards from Warriors too. Where will he go from here? If after the snub, would he still prefer a coaching job with Warriors? Would he go back to his roots and be associated with Kolkata Knight Riders? Probably, commentary would be a better option. The least he could avoid contraversies and speculations.

Teams keep their purse big (especially Deccan, Royals, Kings XI), do big buys in auction, then trade them for even bigger price in Trading Window (no cap). Better business opportunity with in the business model of IPL. Eventually those who bought these big fish only bench them.

I don’t believe IPL games are fixed, At times, I get a feeling that teams purposefully took the game to the last over to ensure tight finishes. It could be an attempt to boost the TRP ratings. Not sure if the trend will continue from here as many teams might tie on points and probably the run rate will decide their fate in the playoffs. Finally, time has arrived where tight finishes may not be the norm of the day.
Every Indian website and news channel boasts Tendulkar interview published in Time Magazine cover. Has anybody really seen the Time Magazine cover? For that matter, had Tendulkar seen the Time Magazine cover? (thanks to my dear friend and co-blogger Balaji Murali for doing this investigation)

Elimination...

We have almost reached the business end of the IPL. At this time Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils have more or less sealed a spot in the playoffs eliminating Warriors and Chargers. It is not official yet, but it will be in a matter of time. That leaves Mumbai, Rajasthan, Chennai, Bangalore and Punjab to fight for the remaining two slots. Though all the 5 teams have realistic chance, let’s see who has better prospects.

From what we have witnessed so far, Mumbai (14, -0.143), Chennai (11, +0.013) and Bangalore (11, -0.333) failed to live up to their potential while Punjab (10, -0.453) and Rajasthan (12, +0.265) has exceeded expectations. Though Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore appear to be on troubled waters Mumbai seems to cross the line more often than the other two. Going by the reputation of these teams (despite questionable stake), it is only fair to expect them coming out firing in all cylinders in the games ahead. By virtue of Mumbai securing wins in the earlier matches (despite pitiable display), they are better candidate than Chennai or Bangalore to finish in the top 4.

Per itinerary, Mumbai has their next games lined up against Bangalore, Knight Riders, Bangalore, Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals. Considering the back to back games with Knight Riders & Bangalore, with the added factor of Knight Riders taking the pressure off the gas (complacency phobia), Mumbai should be able to steal one game apiece from both these oppositions. That should seal the deal for a spot in playoffs and an additional win can only be an affirmation.

Bangalore is due to play Mumbai, Pune, Mumbai, Delhi and Deccan. At such a precarious situation Pune and Deccan games are blessing in disguise. With two games against Mumbai, one against Delhi, if and only Bangalore wins 2 out of 3 they stand a chance of sharing points to make a case. However run rate not in favor could be taken care by Gayle storm.

Chennai is scheduled to play Rajasthan, Delhi, Knight Riders and Punjab. On paper, Punjab and Rajasthan seem to be easy pickings (reality could be different) alone don’t suffice. Taking the current face off situation with Sehwag and Gambir for Dhoni into consideration, it is more or less an end of road for Chennai Super Flop Kings from here.

On the exceeded expectations front, Rajasthan Royals are due to take the challenge of Chennai, Pune, Deccan and Mumbai. Though Rajasthan should fancy their chances against Pune and Deccan, one win against Mumbai or Chennai will do the trick. Further Dravid’s captaincy has been a huge revelation. If it is Hogg one day, then it is Botha the other day. If it is Hodge one day then it is Shah the other day. Tait got his due too. Then the Chavans, Pankaj Singhs, Amit Singhs got sufficient games under their belt too. Even the keepers as Goswami and Yagnik got fair share between them. Finally Dravid, Rahane, Maneria, Trivedi (Watson from here on) has been the feature of the side in all games thus far. When majority of the teams preferred Bench Warmers to boast their strength, Dravid is probably the only skipper rotated his entire squad with subtle change in the playing XI to get every one of his player a decent outing in the middle. In the race to the top 4, they are sure to be one.

One of the most underrated team at the start of the campaign, Punjab is left to play Deccan, Deccan, Delhi, Chennai and Delhi. It has been mountain climb thus far; it will remain a mountain climb ahead after the two Deccan games.

In my earlier post titled, race to the top 4 published few weeks ago, I had predicted Mumbai and Rajasthan a sure shot in playoffs and curious to find the remaining two. Now that portion of riddle is answered. (Don’t know if I will be forced to eat my words).
Is that a bird? Is that Plane? It is Steven Smith
Probably the last time we are seeing Sourav Ganguly playing competitive cricket. Not participating auction can now not be called an excuse as Rajasthan and Punjab put better show with weaker side. Even the Captains of these teams don’t have the track record in comparison with Sourav Ganguly.  All the top edge, bottom edge, inside edge, outside edge, leading edges seems to be exhausted. One innings from memory should help his farewell on good note.

Bottom line: Dada is way past his expiry date. Probably should see him in the commentary panel alongside Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar in the coming years of IPL

ENTERTAINMENT UNLIMITED… but fails to live in memory!!!

Everyone watch this sport for the entertainment value derived from it. Though the appetite varies for each individual, the common denominator for the entertainment quotient is the batsman going hammer and tongs over the bowlers. Teams save wickets and step up to amaze 65-80 runs in the last 5 overs is the anthem of IPL 2012 (A popular ploy adopted by Dhoni & Co for India and Chennai Super Kings over the years). There is hardly a sign of the batsmen nerve wrecked by the daunting required rate even during the finals overs. On the contrary, bowlers impudence are tested in this brief period of play. Until few years ago, nobody would have imagined, piling 50 runs in the last 30 balls is considered sub-par performance. Anyways, the batsman to go bizerk on the day or the bowler to get slaughtered is the only element of surprise.
Though there is tremendous amount of thrills, staggering number of fours and sixes, supreme catching and fielding efforts displayed, the mind seems to forget what happened yesterday. I doubt if anyone would say the same about Ajay Jadeja’s 40 runs scored against Waqar Younis final 2 overs of 96 World Cup or Sachin’s Sharjah Storm or the Nathan Astle’s fastest double century in 2002 etc., The efforts told above appear pale contrast to Gayle Thunder or Sehwag Bulldozer in IPL. However mind fails to register IPL heroics despite the high octane entertainment. So, if value of the entertainment is derived by remembrance of memory, IPL fails big time.
Times, when logic defies the strategy of Mumbai, Delhi hiring all the big guns of domestic and international circuit at huge perks only to bench, here goes something to back it. These big guns are hired by the deep pocket franchises so as they don’t fire against them from the opposition camp. All along if we had perceived that "The game is about to win", it is time to reconsider the phrase "The game is not to let the opposition win".
Interesting to see Hussey, Clarke and Watson for Chennai, Pune and Rajasthan brought more ill luck to their respective teams; soon they arrived and claimed a spot in the XI. It is understandable that teams can’t resist from playing such big names, adjusting to conditions takes time for players too. Wonder why no franchise management get it and rush high profile stars in the playing XI? Gladly, Delhi resisted fielding Warner for out of form Taylor against Royals. By the time Warner takes field, he should be better adjusted to conditions.

Luckily the game of T20 provides ample scope for perfect balance in the side. 5 batsmen, 1 wicket keeper, 1 bowling all rounder and 4 bowlers should do the job. This way the responsibilities are distributed evenly. After all you don't need a steep batting line up for 20 overs a side game and 5 good batsman should do the job comfortably. Similarly teams are better off playing 5 bowlers to keep the batting mights in check. Say the line up of Tendulkar, Gibbs, Sharma, Rayudu, Pollard, Dinesh Karthik, Perara, Harbhajan Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Malinga, RP Singh should do the job comfortably for Mumbai Indians (in my books). That is only an analogy.

Delhi’s 8 wins in 10 matches and Deccan’s 2 wins in 9 matches more or less confirm the former a spot in playoffs and later the status of heartbreaker. Losing to the loser will be the sin for the remaining 7 teams while beating the table topper gives extra mileage.
Bottom line: Let us wait for the drama to unfold in the coming days.
