Dhoni Sizzles, Aussie Fizzles.

Oh My God!!! That was magical from Dhoni. Simply stupendous. Actually it is difficult to put in words to praise the innings. Crux of the runs was piled after the regular batsman Virat Kohli quit the scene.  As many as 222 runs (to be precise) is what Dhoni added to India’s total in the company of Jadeja, Ashwin and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar with 16, 3, 21, plus extras to account for the sources contribution to the partnership. It is heartening to see Dhoni making statement with the bat in Test Cricket with each growing day. He already has the adoration next to Tendulkar. Now he is also taking up the onus of scoring serious runs like the Maestro. So when Tendulkar eventually exits, the Indian public would still have somebody worthy to transfer the patronage. Guess I’m not bullish here.

For now, Dhoni’s 224 will stand tall in the memory of cricket lovers for a very long time.

There were criticisms after Day 2’s play when Patterson bowled only 6 overs with 2 short spell of 3 overs each in which he grabbed (3) all Indian wickets. I too had similar opinion. Mind you, he bowled all 36 balls at a very good pace mostly threading in the range of 145- 150 kmph. May be the criticism had merit, Clarke operated Pattinson more on Day 3 with each spell mostly ranging 4 overs. The day he bowled more overs with bigger spells, it was also the day he could not sustain to the pace as Day 2. The frequencies of clocking 145+ Kmph became rarity. Thus his bowling on Day 3 was not as effective as Day 2. Of course, Dhoni batting on a different league made matter worse for Pattinson and Australia. As an observer, if I sit back and review it all, I now agree that Clarke was correct in bowling Pattison sparingly and effectively on Day 2. May be that is the way he should be operated, going forward.

At the same time, bowling at 130+ (Starc, Siddle, Henriques) appeared pedestrian on that surface. And, Indians never allowed Lyon to settle at all. I thought Australia learnt beforehand from England when Barmy Army dropped Panesar for the first Test only to realize it was a grave mistake. I guess Xoherty will walk in to the side automatically for the second Test at the cost of Starc or Siddle. By no means, I rate Xoherty in par with Panesar. The idea is, he could be effective than the medium fast bowling of Starc, Siddle or Heniques. The least it will be relatively easy to handle the work load. If I were Clarke, I will have no hesitation to play Xoherty for Siddle and Johson for Starc in the second Test. Considering the vulnerability of the Australian batting line up against slow bowling, Johnson could be a handy option for his little known ability with the bat added to his left arm pace bowling variety. By all means, Henriques with the bat was the surprise package of this Test Match.

Back to India, “there is no reason to change the winning team” will be the popular thought. I also expect the team management to retain the same XI for the second Test. However, common sense says, Ojha is a better choice than Jadeja for the role of left arm spinner. After all, Australian batting is likely to get better with each Test Match innings and it is important to deal bigger spades when the challenges rise. Also with B Kumar showing how tight he can bat, he is more than adequate to compensate Jadeja’s offerings with the bat. If Vijay fails again in this paltry run chase, it would not be a bad idea to consider Rahane for the opening role. Again, I know that is unlikely to happen.

As predicted, India started 1-0 up. How will India progress from here is the key. I guess India will not lose the steam immediately like against England. Thanks again to “The Dhoni Innings” that should do world of good for India to carry the momentum or in other words induce some spirit in the batting camp.

My line up for second Test:
Rahane, Sehwag, Pujara, Tendulkar, Kohli, Dhoni, Ashwin, B Kumar, Harbhajan, Ojha, I Sharma (By the way, I’ve not changed the line up, I proposed for the first Test)

Warner, Cowan, Hughes/Khawaja, Clarke, Watson, Henriques, Wade, Johnson, Lyon, Xoherty, Pattision.

Bottom line: India Win or an Aussie draw is the prospect at Hyderabad. What I mean by the statement is - First Test performance is far from satisfactory to believe Australia can win the next Test.

India messes the advantage...

Is Dhoni insane? I seriously doubt if he is one. It is simply not justified how Pragyan Ojha is dropped from the XI for the First Test against Australia at Chepauk. For God sake, Ojha was the leading wicket taker in the recently concluded Test series versus England. Dropping him from the playing XI is as good dropping a batsman like Pujara from the XI. It is a pity India gives preferential treatment to batting talents (even when the batsman are out of form or fail to deliver consistently) while continues to give cold shoulders to their bowling counterparts.

I’ve this much common sense to understand that with 4 left handers in the opposition line up, you don’t need two left arm spinners to tackle them. It also does not mean that you can field any left arm spinner simply because the chosen left arm spinner has little (unproven) batting ability. This is seriously insane. Also the chosen one (Jadeja), replaced a batsman at No.6 and also a specialist bowler (possibly your No.1 too) from the side. To some extent I could digest Jadeja replacing the batsman like Rahane (for Jadeja being handy with the ball). After all, Rahane is pretty much an unknown commodity in this level of cricket. However, not by any means, Jadeja replacing the left arm bowler Ojha justifies. I don’t know if I’m over reacting, but this is what I feel at this time. Also Jadeja’s selection that substituted two specialist players warrants immense faith on his ability by the skipper or an ELITE friendship to prove. I see the latter being the reason for the ALL-ROUNDERS selection. God save Dhoni!!!

Back to the game, I should say, I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of Ashwin, especially when his place in the side as lead spinner is debated. On this day, with the medium pace duo of B Kumar & I Sharma ineffective, uninspiring Harbhajan Singh despite an inspired/brave selection by selectors/team management, Jadeja doing adequate for a support bowler, it was truly inspiring to see Ashwin delivering a performance that floored the opposition at 153/5. Mind you, Ashwin’s performance until this point included the drop catch of Warner at slips and a poor decision by the Umpire when the Centurion Clark was on 39.

From a precarious 153/5 to a competitive 317/7, you must give it to the duo of Henriques and Clarke for their sheer brilliance and application with the bat. At the same time, it is equally the fault of the home team to slip away the advantage. Blame it on selection blunder; I’m sure an Ojha would have done a better job that could have possibly folded Australia inside 250. If for any reasons Clarke & Co piles up another 75 runs from here, it is not going to be any easy chase for India. At the same time, if one of the top batsmen did not get any support at No.6, we will have more reasons to blame on selecting Jadeja for the role.

Bottom line: Advantage Lost!!!

Build up for the Aussie Bash....

It’s time to build up another important series in Indian Cricket Calendar. Before I proceed, I would like to put a Disclaimer: I’m not very good at building up series. The last time I built up India’s Tour of England, India’s Tour of Australia, England’s Tour of India – we all know how these series panned out. So please proceed with caution.

Jokes apart, this is probably the series India will perform better than the earlier said affairs. In the sense, we acknowledged that our failures in the recent past were not aberrations, we accepted that we are not the No.1 side any more, we are working on phasing out the ageing seniors/stalwarts, trying to locate new set of resources to take up the challenges, importantly addressing the political dissents in the side (I’m not commenting if it is handled the correct way). Again, I may be critical about the pace at which the transition process is handled, strategies adopted, choice of resources etc. but the point is - things are beginning to happen. Like, Pujara is settling down well in place of Dravid at No.3, Kohli is blowing hot and cold to replace Laxman at No.5, B Kumar should be a good alternate to Zaheer Khan, while any of Vijay/Rahane/Dhawan is a better choice than Gambir to open the innings. Between, we have also unearthed an Ashwin who lends solidity lower down the order and is more than handy option as a 5th bowler. Between, we should start seeing results sooner.

For starters, we can make certain safe assumptions. There is no way Australia is going to win the First Test match. In all likelihood, India is all set to start 1-0 up at Hyderabad. Then, it is all about carrying that winning momentum to the reminder of the series or flounder the advantage at some stage like against England.

I would like to build up this series based on the popular phrase, “Batsmen save Test matches, Bowlers win them”.

From India
We already knew that Pujara is THE player in our ranks realistically capable of batting sessions. He proved it against England. I’ve no doubt he will live up to the reputation against Australia too. The issue is - who else is going to step up? It is my personal judgment that Ajinkya Rahane has the caliber to bat sessions. The question is - will he get the opportunity to play? The next hope is Virat Kohli. Quality is not his issue, Quantity is!!! Having played Tests against Australia, New Zealand and England with lots of lows than high, I guess his time has arrived to make some serious runs. And then there are Sehwags, Tendulkars, Dhonis, Ashwins. I’m sure they will all provide meaningful performance over the course of the series to support the trio mentioned above. Having said that, I do feel India has little too many stroke players (Sehwag, Vijay, Kohli, Dhoni, Jadeja) in the squad that creates Goosebumps. However, with respect to the question (Do we have batsman to save Test Matches?), YES is my answer. By the way, I expect India to play, Pujara, Kohli, Rahane and Ashwin in all matches.

As much as we desire for a settled batting line up, it is important a settled bowling unit is fielded throughout the series. In other words, India should take this opportunity to settle on their bowling resources (Similar to the way, India settled to B Kumar, Ishanth Sharma, Shami Ahmed, Ashwin and Jadeja in the ODI’s that started producing results).

With respect to bowling outfit, it is surely an improved version compared to England series. I mean, there is no off-color Zaheer Khan or the injury prone Umesh Yadav to give selection headache ahead of the game day. So, it is good news from my perspective. Boiling down to the individual talents, B Kumar and Pragyan Ojha are the best bets. Is the duo good enough to run thru the Australian side in every match? Not possibly. The support cast of Harbhajan Singh and Ashwin are not exciting. Thankfully Ishant Sharma had good number of limited overs games in the recent days, is a big plus. But one cannot ignore the fact that Ishant Sharma is not popular on wickets columns. With Jadeja, I still ponder if he is a worth an investment in Test Cricket? It is my personal judgment that Ashwin has better potential to become a good all round cricketer than Jadeja in Test Cricket. Also, I don’t see a need for two left arm spinners in the XI, when there are as many as 4/5 left hand batters in the opposition line up (Cowan, Warner, Hughes, Wade, Khawaja, Johnson).

Logically, B Kumar, Ojha, Ishant Sharma and Harbhajan Singh are the best bowling options from the squad. And, Ashwin is more than adequate to walk into the side as 5th bowler. If the above bowling quadrant is persisted majority of the series, I would say, the attack has the ability to support the totals posted by the batting unit.

Sehwag, Rahane, Pujara, Tendulkar, Kohli, Ashwin, Dhoni, B Kumar, Harbhajan, Ishanth Sharma, Ojha would be my starting lineup.

At this time, I read Ashwin as a better batsman than Vijay and prefer to play him in the XI. Also his inclusion should help the relatively weaker bowling unit. After all, bowlers win matches and it is important that India has adequate bowling resources in the lineup.

But, the management/selectors perceive Rahane as middle order prospect. So, Vijay should partner Sehwag, while Rahane is likely to compete for a spot in the side with Ashwin/Jadeja. Knowing our conservative approach to pack the side with batsman, it most likely that India will field Sehwag, Vijay, Pujara, Tendulkar, Kohli, Rahane, Dhoni, B Kumar, Ashwin, Ishanth Sharma, Ojha.

From Australia
Outside Michel Clarke, I don’t see any other batsman a big threat. It is funny that every day Michel Clarke keeps picking Shane Watson for his role in the side as a pure batsman. It is high time somebody remind Clarke that Watson is probably their next best bet with the bat. Curious to see how remaining batsman cope with the low, slow sub-continent strips (except Mohali)?

In area of fast bowling, Australians are far superior. Siddle, Johnson, Starc, Pattinson are all, better resources than the Indian counterpart. Also Lyon appears to be in better form than Ashwin & Bhajji in the spin department. So the contest is likely to be between Indian Batsman Vs Australian Bowlers. With respect to the logic of building this series, I back the Indian batsman to come good over Australian bowlers in the low slow sub-continent surfaces. Similarly, I back the weaker Indian bowling to outsmart the inexperienced Aussie batting lineup.

Warner, Cowan, Hughes, Watson, Clarke, Khawaja, Wade, Xoherty, Lyon, Siddle, Starc/Johnson could be the possible lineup for the First Test.

In all, India should win at Chennai, thread between draw and win at Hyderabad & Delhi and lose at Mohali.

Bottom line: I predict India to win 2-1. I will be more than excited if India wins 3-1. I will be extremely critical at selectors/team management, if India manages to draw the series 1-1. If, India loses the series – CHOP THE CAPTAIN.

Selection Review

I continue from where I left off in the earlier post, The Race Begins. Following is the squad I had predicted to represent India to start the series against Australia.

Sehwag, Rahane, Vijay, Pujara, Tendulkar, Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Tiwary, Dhoni, Jadeja, Ojha, Ashwin, B Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Shami Ahmed.

Of course, the prediction was done prior to the Irani Trophy match. At the same time, I did not believe that the outcome of Irani Trophy would tamper the squad too much. After the Irani Trophy, I felt Rohit Sharma would be better off to be replaced by Rayudu. By the way, I did watch the match in bits and pieces.

Following is the actual squad presented by the National Selectors for the first two tests against Australia.

Dhoni (capt.), Sehwag, Tendulkar, Kohli, Dhawan, Vijay, Rahane, Pujara, Jadeja, Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma, B Kumar, Ashwin, Ojha, Dinda

It is time for a quick review. First things first, you feel good when your readings turn correct. Glad to see the ouster of Gambir turned right this time. Now, it remains to be seen, if Gambir and Sehwag will ever feature together in an International match for India (in the current regime). It is interesting to see that the selectors picked as many as four openers (Sehwag, Vijay, Dhawan and Rahane) in the squad. Obviously, having four openers in the squad is more than luxury. Mind you, the current selectors had already done this when they announced the squad featuring Sehwag, Gambir, Vijay and Rahane for the England series. Interestingly neither Vijay or Rahane played in any of four Tests, despite the duo of Sehwag and Gambir failed game after game. So, this time around, I guess, the selectors/team management picked Rahane as a middle order batsman or considering demoting Sehwag to the middle order so as new set of openers can be groomed with the future in mind. Considering, India’s conservative approach, I feel the latter is highly unlikely to happen and so Rahane is considered a better candidate for middle order over Tiwary or Rohit sharma.

The Surprises
Dhawan selection came in as a sweet surprise. If the logic of perceiving Sehwag or Rahane as a middle order batsman holds good, then Dhawan selection carries merit. Also there are only few contenders like Wasim Jaffer, Jeevanjot Singh, Abinav Mukund and Unmukt Chand in the circuit for opening slot. Mukund and Chand are way behind to run the race at this time, while Jaffer is already little old (35) to stage a comeback. Many argue Jaffer’s form for selection, but I feel India is in the state of transition and Jaffer selection will further slowdown the process. In other words, Jaffer selection can only be termed as an interim measure. Also for an opening batsman, you have to be on top of your reflexes as the ball will be at its best. So, Jaffer’s age should hurt him in this aspect especially when India travels abroad. It is for this same reason I also feel Gambir staging a comeback as an opening batsman in Test Cricket is out of picture. Also the selection of Dhawan gives the Team management to open the batting with left and right combination. By the way, I’m NOT backing Dhawan to debut in the first test. By all means, it should be Vijay and Sehwag (while my heart beats for Rahane and Sehwag). If that happens and Ravindra Jadeja is preferred for the balance of composition, it will be very harsh on Rahane. After all, Vijay is making his second come back since debut while Rahane is waiting in the wings for nearly 2 years to announce his arrival. By the way, I’ve no issues with Dhawan selection. However, Jeevanjoth Singh selection could have turned an inspirational one.

Dinda’s selection also surprised me. Once the trio of Shami Ahmed, Ishanth Sharma and B Kumar cemented their places in the limited overs game (in other words eliminated Dinda from the equation), it is a surprise to see Dinda preferred over Shami Ahmed. Also it baffled me when Mithun was picked over Shami Ahmed in the Irani Trophy match. Sometimes, it is better not to understand “why it happens, the way it happens” (in) Indian Cricket.

The Mother of Come Back
He was chopped from the squad for the final test against England. He is chosen for the first two Tests against Australia. This is what you call the mother of come back. I still fail to understand what Harbhajan Singh did in this interim period that demanded reinstating. However, I do understand the logic. Ashwin’s form with the ball is not too overwhelming. While the number of left hand batsman in the lineup coupled with Harbhajan’s record against Australia must have earned him the recall. If that is the case, should not Harbhajan Singh already on board with the squad that toured Australia??? Never mind.

By all means this squad (on form) is better than the one that played England. Also Australia is not a strong opponent compared to England. I will preview the series later.

Bottom line: Selectors gain thumbs up for axing Gambir, otherwise there is nothing praise worthy.

The Race Begins...

Rest of India: Virender Sehwag (capt), Shikhar Dhawan, M Vijay, Manoj Tiwary, Suresh Raina, Wriddhiman Saha, Harbhajan Singh, S Sreesanth, Pragyan Ojha, Ishwar Pandey, Abhimanyu Mithun, Ambati Rayudu, Shami Ahmed, Jalaj Saxena

Board President's XI: Abhinav Mukund (capt), Robin Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu, Mandeep Singh, Kedar Jadhav, Parthiv Patel, Stuart Binny, Sarabjit Ladda, Parvez Rassol, Shami Ahmed, Parvinder Awana, Kamlesh Makwana.

India A: Shikhar Dhawan (capt), Jiwanjot Singh, Rohit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary, Ajinkya Rahane, C Gautam, Rakesh Dhruv, Jalaj Saxena, Manpreet Gony, Vinay Kumar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Ashok Menaria.

The above are the squads to play Irani Trophy and warm up matches against Australia. I’m just trying to figure what I can derive from these squads to arrive at the final squad to play against Australia.

For starters, the following names are missing. Dhoni, Gambir, Yuvraj Singh, Pujara, Kohli, Jadeja, Ashwin, Chawla, Mishra, B Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Irfan Pathan and Ishanth Sharma. Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan will be featuring Mumbai when they take on Rest of India. However, Zaheer Khan is already ruled unfit to play Irani Trophy. Out of all these names, let’s speculate who is in and who is out.

We can be sure that selectors have decided to go past Yuvraj when they axed him in the middle of England series. Also his absence from all above squad confirms that he is out of fray as a Test Cricketer (may be for the rest of his career too). To some extent the same logic should hold good for Zaheer Khan too. And B Kumar arrival more or less sealed the fate of Zaheer Khan. Non selection of Chawla and Mishra means – either they are completely ignored or considered as surprise ammo to thwart Aussie batsman. I personally don’t favor either of them. Pujara does not have to play any of these matches to make a case, while Yadav and Irfan are nursing injuries. And then it is fair to assume Dhoni, Ashwin, Ishant Sharma and Kohli are rested for playing non-stop cricket (you know from when). I would like to include the name of Gambir too. However I’ve already been speculating that Gambir and Sehwag together may not feature in the same XI for India (the least in the near future). I also see India is experimenting different openers in each of the above squad which makes me feel “May be I’m right this time on Gambir Axe”. Again, you can never be sure about anything in Indian Cricket.

If we agree that Sehwag, Tendulkar, Dhoni, Kohli, Pujara, Ojha, Ashwin and B Kumar are sure to make the cut in the squad, then who could be the remaining 7?

Though Saxena and Pandey feature in Rest of India Squad, I’m not entirely sure if the duo will get an opportunity to play. Mithun should sit out with them to allow the remaining XI to take the field. Luckily Saxena is selected in India A where he can be sure of playing in the XI. Basically I’m running Pandey and Mithun out of the race for a place in the India Squad.

Interestingly, the name of Shami Ahmed features in all 3 teams. That makes it clear that the selectors want to have a good look of him (either to replace currently rested and popularly out of form Ishant Sharma or substitute for Yadav if the latter could not recover in time). Basically, Ishant Sharma’s place in squad will be decided by the performance of Shami Ahmed or by the non-availability of Umesh Yadav. Eventually 2 among the 3 will make the cut for 2 additional fast bowlers. I don’t even give Sreeshanth an outside chance. I personally back Umesh Yadav and Shami Ahmed to be two bowlers to join B Kumar.

The performance of Tiwary, Rohit Sharma, Raina and Rayudu will be closely watched for two middle order batsmen. One among the 2 selected will eventually fight for a spot in the XI in place of all-rounder Jadeja. I back Tiwary and Rohit Sharma here.

The selectors will field 2 more openers in the final squad. I think Vijay should partner Sehwag in the Irani Trophy, while Jiwanjot Singh should pair Rahane in India A. Though Dhawan is selected in both Rest of India and India A, I doubt he will walk in as opener in both games. But he is sure to play both games. So, who among Rahane, Jeevanjot Singh, Dhawan and Vijay will make the cut for two more spots in the squad as openers is desirable? Though I back Vijay and Rahane, I strongly feel Jiwanjoth Singh as the dark horse to upset Vijay or even Rahane.

The last place should go to an all-rounder. Saxena is no were in near vicinity to run the race with Jadeja. Pathan is unlikely to be favored in Indian Conditions (even if he recovers from injury on time). However Jadeja will be compelled to run the race as 2nd spinner with Ashwin and Ojha for a place in the final XI.

With respect to names in Board President’s XI, we can safely assume that these players are selected for motivational purposes only.

For starters, I give thumbs up to the following squad to represent India against Australia.

Sehwag, Rahane, Vijay, Pujara, Tendulkar, Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary, Dhoni, Jadeja, Ojha, Ashwin, B Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Shami Ahmed.

After the Irani Trophy and warm up matches against Australia, we will review to see if things changed.

Bottom line: The Race Begins…

Blue Print...

The 4 T20’s and 8 ODI’s scheduled before the commencement of Australia Test series definitely served well for Indian Cricket. I know there is still a game left, but the performances from the earlier matches are already sufficient to start working on a blue print.

Let’s go over in detail.

All of batting, bowling and captaincy (fielding included) failed India that resulted in England sealing the series 2-1.

I personally wanted the Selectors and Team Management to use the 12 games into good effect to address the issues/short comings from the England series and before. To be precise, identifying fresh pair of opening batsmen, discovering new bowling talents and groom an able candidate to replace Dhoni as a Captain (in the future). Now, after 12 games, I would like to review the Selectors/ Team Management’s performance in this aspect (as how well they capitalized this opportunity to find solutions to their problems).

Did
Young Rahane was given a decent run in place of Sehwag as an opening batsman. Rohit Sharma was tried as an opening batsman in the penultimate ODI against England. Dinda, Awana, B Kumar and Shami Ahmed were tried in the area of fast bowling. The wickets in the main centers produced more bounce, pace and swing for the bowlers.

Did Not
Though Ashwin was found wanting in the Tests as a lead spinner, India did not attempt to try a new spinner in all these 12 games. Rather, India persist playing Ashwin in almost all matches. To some extent this ploy was understandable. It is my guess that the Selectors/Management wanted to give Ashwin a good run in his favorite format to strike form before the Australia series. Selectors did not attempt to try a new skipper (even in the shortest formats), thus sending a strong message to the seniors, youngsters and public that “Dhoni is the ONE”.

The Big Review
Now that we know what Selectors/Management, DID and DIDNOT, let us review their work. Good things first, Selectors can proudly raise their collars, for introducing B Kumar and Shami Ahmed. Surely the duo appears to be quiet a good prospect in the fast bowling department. As I had mentioned before that I’m little circumspect over B Kumar as I feel his success is largely due to the 2 new balls (coupled with surface) used in One Day Cricket. Also his quota of overs was mostly completed when the ball is new. In Test arena, he will have to operate with older ball most time. So, it remains to be seen as how well he fairs there. At the same time, I’m very certain that he would do a better job than the current form of Zaheer Khan. Zaheer Khan of today neither picks wickets with the old ball or new ball. From that perspective, B Kumar definitely gets thumbs up over Zaheer Khan. Also, for the next 3 years, India is likely to play more matches abroad than home. Also the new ODI rules with 2 new balls are there to stay (the least till next World Cup). So, B Kumar more or less will be a permanent fixture for India in multiple formats. Probably, even Praveen Kumar could get another lease of life as a back up to B Kumar. Also an ideal situation for Irfan Pathan to stage a comeback once his injuries woes get over. And there are more youngsters in the lineup waiting for a call too.

Though the results against Pakistan and England did not matter, the win over England was due to the fact that India settled to the combination of B Kumar, Shami Ahmed, I Sharma, Ashwin and Jadeja. This established two points. It helps India to win more matches when played with 5 bowlers (despite the batting department not clicking well.) The same combination of bowlers allows each bowler to settle to their roles very well. It is time India takes a leaf out of their own book and tries the same in Tests too.

With respect to batting, it is disappointing that Rahane could not produce runs as many as we would have wanted/expected. However, he did not do any bad for himself or in comparison to Gambir so far. Rahane in all 16 matches scored 404 runs at the average of 25.25, while Gambir in his first 16 matches scored 409 runs at the average of 25.56. Even the average of both these batsmen in the current two series should be more or less the same. From what we have seen with Rahane, he deserves another run for more evaluation. When compared to the opportunities given to Rohit Sharma and Jadeja (including their limited bench time), Rahane definitely deserve a longer run.

On the flip side, I’m extremely disappointed with the selectors for not trying a new skipper in the shortest format (to say the least). I would have been happy had India explored a new spinner in one day cricket. Finally, the management did not earn any point for not debuting Pujara (up until 4th one dayer). This is another instance where the Team Management ignored a player’s form while selecting the playing XI.

As much I root for Rahane’s extended run, as much I root for Pujara’s inclusion in the ODI setup, as much I root for Gambir’s exclusion (I heavily blame the Team Management here for not doing all of the above), I appreciate the Team Management’s effort for trying Rohit Sharma as an opener in the penultimate ODI against England. I did not say this because he made runs. The logic is – India is looking for new opener in Tests. And it is very evident that Gambir will be replaced in the first test against Australia. Logically, it would have made more sense if Pujara had opened the innings for his inclusion in ODI set up, but it is important India also use this opportunity to find the next opening batsman to pair Sehwag in Test Cricket (until Sehwag himself is replaced or repositioned). I don’t necessarily say that the Team Management approached Rohit Sharma’s inclusion in the 4th ODI in this perspective. At the same time I don’t wish to ignore the possibility too.

After watching Rohit's innings today to entirety, he batted out (both) the new balls quiet comfortably on a good surface that assisted bowlers. He was behind the ball well ahead of time. There was only once he was beaten. Also once he tried to play a shot too early that almost cost his wicket (thanks to Pieterson for dropping at Mid-Off). But that was a shot in effort to accelerate the run rate. Otherwise he definitely looked tight and composed. May be it is India’s curse that they could never discover a proper opening pair in Test Cricket. May be India is a country that is destined to get the job done by make shift opener only. Let’s see.

Though the negatives outweigh the positives, I still wish to be generous and give 60/100 to the conservative crop of Selectors and Team Management for putting some effort to progress.

The Blue Print in writing

We already have Ojha and Yadav ready to bloat the resource pool of bowlers in Test Cricket. For a place in side, the best the make the cut. From my perspective Yadav, B Kumar, Shami Ahmed and Ojha are automatic selections. One among Ashwin and Jadeja will fill the fifth spot as a batting all-rounder (I know they are not there yet to be called as batting all-rounders or even deserved to be called as a bowling all-rounder. But somewhere we have to start creating one). I will give Ashwin the first opportunity considering his batting skills are better and more suited than Jadeja for Test Cricket and his off spin bowling could be a variety to the attack. Ishant Sharma will get a place in the side only if Yadav is down. After all Sharma’s wicket column never helps his case for a place in the XI (But in the recent ODI’s he has improved and picked some wickets too). However, we all know Indian Cricket is not played this way (5 bowlers). The spot of Shami Ahmed will go to a batsman or a spinner, until Jadeja/Ashwin turns into a genuine all-rounder.

My starting XI for the first test against Australia would be
Sehwag, Rahane/Rohit, Pujara, Tendulkar, Kohli, Dhoni, Ashwin, B Kumar, Ojha, Yadav, Shami/Chawla/Jadeja. (Chawla/Jadeja's selection based on surface)

I guess, by the end of Australia series/beginning of South Africa series, Tendulkar would have retired and Sehwag would have taken his spot as middle order batsman. While someone like Unmukt Chand or Jeevanjot Singh should be surfacing for the role of opening batsman.

Bottom Line: We will keep working on the Blue Print.

Play him or send him...

What is the point in having him (Pujara) in the squad and not playing him? The least if he is released, Sourashtra will benefitted for having their star player in the side for the upcoming Semi Finals against Punjab in the ongoing season of Ranji Trophy. And it does give Sourashtra a fair opportunity to fight against Punjab. Sometimes, it is disappointing to see the way things work in Indian Cricket.

While I’m baffled as how Gambir continues to play game after game despite a horrendous run (for a long time now) with the peculiar technique of prodding the ball outside the off stump (that makes me puke), a friend of mine gave an interesting theory. According to him, Srinivasan & Co did not want public to believe, Gambir ouster is influenced by a political motto. Well, it wasn’t too hard for me to buy the theory. However, I still feel it was never Dhoni’s style to drop a senior player (it took him forever to drop Sehwag from the T20 and ODI) from the playing XI. Eventually, the selectors eased his pain by dropping Sehwag from T20 and ODIs squad permenantly. By all means, I opine, Dhoni again wish the selectors to take the ownership and drop Gambir from the side too. Anyways, we will have our answers as selectors gather to announce the squad for the final two one dayers on 19th Jan.

In the meantime, let me present you another dimension to this subject. I guess Gambir and Sehwag will not be fielded together in Indian colors. Obviously both of them in the same team would be too much pain for Dhoni. Gambir in all probability will be restricted to limited overs cricket, while Sehwag in Tests only. Well, that is only my personal speculation. We will have to wait and see if the speculation carries any merit when the squad for the Test Series against Austraila is announced. By any means, Rahane should be thanked for Gambir’s extended run in the playing XI (in the ongoing one day series). Obviously, Rahane scores more or less the same amount of runs as Gambir in every game since the final ODI against Pakistan. That makes Gambir undroppable, while Pujara waits in the wings for no reasons.

Between, India won the 2nd ODI against England quiet emphatically. As the games moved to the smaller centers, all those pace, bounce, movement have become very subtle or none. The tracks are more in the lines of typical sub-continent surface. It was no surprise, Jadeja won man of the match (although after his performance), while I was little surprised that the award did not go to Mahinder Singh Dhoni for his scintillating 72 and Captaincy.

As the game moves to Dhoni’s Home Town, it should be another run fare.

3 Down, 1 To Go!!!

After closely following the ODI series Vs Pakistan, I for a moment felt, if cricket has moved back to the era of 80’s? Oh yeah, 250 was the highest score in 3 matches. If you did not watch the games and simply read the scorecards, numbers as 157, 167, 165, 227 etc., are sure to raise the suspicion, did they play in dustbowl?

Never mind. You can be confident that cricket was not played in dustbowls. Few changes to playing rules (Only 15 overs of power play instead of 20, 2 new balls from each end, Only 4 fielders allowed outside the 30 yard circle during non-power play overs) and little effort from the curators to provide lively tracks – ODI Cricket has moved to a new era!!! Because they were all India-Pakistan matches, stadiums were mostly full. Otherwise empty stands are sure to rule ODI, if scores less than 200 are regular feature. In other words, the seeds are sown to bring curtains to ODI cricket. Wait!!! I hear somebody say - it was already done with the inception of T20 and Franchise Leagues. Let’s do this topic another day.

As a cricket lover, I thoroughly enjoyed watching these games. After all I’m very much fatigued watching non-stop run scoring and slam-bang cricket (no respect for bowler whatsoever) for some time now (especially in subcontinent). And these games when ball did the talking, it sure brought relief. Also I should say I was little startled by the EFFECT of rule changes. I honestly did not expect the impact of 2 new balls coupled with more men inside the circle to be this BIG. However, it still remains to be seen as how the run rate pattern would be in a typical sub-continent surface.

I’m sure it is due to the tours of South Africa, New Zealand, England, Australia and World Cup 2015 (at Australia-New Zealand) BCCI has moved on a rapid pace to change the nature of the tracks.  And they did not mind the temporary loses. Also they did not bother chopping few heads in the name of World Cup 2015. If all this is done with that vision – BCCI, take a bow!!! Also please rub this attitude in Test Cricket too.

After watching this series, I’m definitely excited by the arrival of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shami Ahmed. On a circumspect note, I tend to think two new balls (couple with surface) is what showing Bhuvneshwar Kumar in better light. After all, the new ball stays newer for a longer time than usual that assists the likes of B Kumar good. I think it is for this same reason Dhoni finished B Kumar in the final ODI as early as possible. Anyways, we will have a good idea when young Kumar features in Test Cricket. With respect to Shami Ahmed, I personally feel he is more in the mold of Ishant Sharma (bowling predominantly back of length deliveries). I just hope he is not as unlucky as Ishant. The good thing about Shami is he tried bowling Yorkers towards the end. I’ve been screaming for a while that India should use this opportunity of 4 T20’s and 8 ODI’s to narrow down the bowling resources for the Test series against Australia. At the half way stage, I’m definitely delighted by the promises offered by Kumar and Ahmed. In the same line, I would have been happier had the selectors tried a new spinner (like Jalaj Saxena) instead of Ashwin for the England ODI’s. In other words, Ashwin deserves a break for the non-stop cricket he has been playing all along. And India needs to validate the spin cupboard.

Sehwag Axe
Sehwag axe was on the cards for a while now. Especially Dhoni’s announcement as skipper for the T20’s (despite World T20 defeat) against England and Pakistan confirmed the axe. The move of selectors pursuing with Dhoni made the statement, “The New India to be built around Dhoni!!!” Sehwag’s tiff with Dhoni hardly helps the Delhi Marauder in the large scheme of things. This day, it turned reality. First he was dropped from T20 playing XI, then dropped from the T20 squad, then dropped from the ODI XI and now dropped from the ODI squad too. Sehwag’s poor performance made the exit painless for Dhoni & Selectors as they could avoid the public wrath. I’m sure his days are numbered in Test Cricket too, unless he stages a grand come back in all formats when the head of administration changes. I’m sure Gambir must be feeling the pinch already. I’ve no doubts Gambir will be dropped starting from the first ODI (if not after) against England. It is very evident India need to play 5 bowlers (B Kumar, S Ahmed, Ishanth Sharma, Ashwin and Jadeja) in the revised playing conditions/rules. Dhoni will take the 6th spot. That leaves, India to play only 5 batsman. Of the 5, Kohli, Raina and Yuvraj Singh are automatic selections. That leaves Pujara, Rahane, Rohit Sharma and Gambir to fight it out for 2 spots. It will be insane to drop your best batsman (especially when he was called up as Save Our Soul measure). Which means Gambir will pave way for Rahane as Rahane has warmed the bench long enough.

For those who think Sehwag deserve a chance as much as Rohit Sharma in the Squad - If Rohit Sharma is regularly benched, nobody is going to care much. However the same is not possible with Sehwag. The management will be compelled to answer many questions for every game Sehwag not selected and India lose it.

Bottom line: Zaheer Khan, Tendulkar, Sehwag and Gambir featured in the CB Series at Australia. A year now, it is 3 down and 1 to go!!

"A Ton in Vain" made SENSE...

I simply could not believe the events that unfolded at Chepauk on Sunday (30th Dec 2012).  By the way, I still cannot believe what happened last time I was in Chepauk to watch an India – Pakistan (ODI) encounter. It was 1997. I should say I was lucky to have got the tickets. I was sitting in the stands alongside my friends. A jam packed stadium chanting “Gumthalakkadi gala gala gala… ooh aah ooh aah” was blowing away the roof top. By the way, none knew the meaning of this phrase.

The high octane crowd was all set to witness their home team thrash the archrivals. But then nobody knew that Saeed Anwar had other plans. Thanks to his cramps/injury that aided him a by-runner to take on the sweltering heat & humidity of the Special Chennai Summer (more than the Indian attack). In the end, he badly bruised the home team with a masterful 194 that still remain vivid in my eyes. Not to mention the three consecutive sixes he hammered Anil Kumble. In other words, Saeed Anwar simply executed the Indian attack this day. The real beauty was the quick turnaround of the crowd’s attitude. Rather booing for the home team’s failure, a wise crowd quickly started acknowledging Saeed Anwar’s mastery. For a moment, it appeared as though Pakistan was playing in Pakistan. Not to let down the fans, the home side fought brave (despite early exit of Tendulkar) in the mammoth chase of 327. Rahul Dravid essayed a beautiful 100 in the company of Vinod Kambli. Robin Singh tried his best to create some false hopes towards the end. Anyways, a fitting result for a fitting innings. And, the record stood tall for the highest individual score for more than a decade.

After 13 years, Chepauk produced yet another remarkable innings, in an India-Pakistan encounter. This time from the Indian camp. It was easily one of the best Captain’s knock (Dhoni innings too) that I’ve witnessed in some years of watching cricket. Tottering at 29/5, in walked M.S. Dhoni to play an innings totally out of character. May be, this has become his new character in the recent days. After all, the 99 he scored against England in the final Test came under similar circumstances with a similar structure. A very laborious start mostly in the survival mode, then raising hopes to live thru the day (and living up to it), managing useful partnerships with Raina and Ashwin, eventually launching himself to a blistering finish to score 113 that took India past 225. This surely goes a notch higher than the World Cup Finale. Unfortunately, a historical innings did not change the course. Pakistan remained victorious yet another time at Chepauk. For convenience I’m ignoring Tendulkar’s mastery. If you take that into account, then Pakistan prevails over India at Chepauk irrespective of the format. Oh yeah, they still need to play a T20 here for confirmation.

I’m able to observe some refreshing changes in Indian Cricket. Of the 4 T20’s and 1 ODI played in the recent days, the least 3 of them were played in lively tracks. The selectors showed the willingness to move forward by dropping Sehwag in the T20s. However, I was pleasantly surprised when Ravindra Jadeja was dropped for the last T20 and the first ODI against Pakistan. Usually that doesn’t happen, considering he got into the Test lineup, soon he was drafted into the squad. Again, I won’t be surprised if he comes in place of Rohit Sharma for the second ODI. It is a pity Rahane keeps warming the bench even in ODIs. It is a blessing in disguise that Tiwary got injured in domestic cricket. Otherwise he would have given him company in the perennial bench warmer list.

I would be personally delighted if India fields the following XI for the second ODI.

Sehwag/Gambir, Rahane, Kohli, Yuvraj, Dhoni, Raina, Ashwin, Jadeja, B Kumar, Shami Ahmed, Ishanth Sharma/Dinda.

It would not be bad idea if Pujara is drafted into the ODI setup sooner than later.

Moving ahead, it is nice to see young Bhuvaneshwar Kumar shaping up good. Hopefully he will answer some of India’s bowling woes as they take on Aussies in the Test series. From the current crop I only see Umesh Yadav and Pragyan Ojha as the two bowlers who are ready to take their places in the lineup. Ashwin is clearly not in any league as Harbhajan Singh to be the lead spinner. However, Ashwin is decent enough to cement his place as a 5th bowler, in other words as a genuine all-rounder. If B Kumar can last the distance (all 8 ODI’s before the Test series) with good performances, he is good to cement his place in the side as the third bowler. This leaves one bowling spot vacant. From the looks of it, it appears, India will settle that spot to the leg spinner (Piyush Chawla). But, if they chose to go the seamer way (depending on the surface), that spot should go to Ishanth Sharma. It is a not bad idea to have a good look of Shami Ahmed (in the ODI’s) before deciding on Sharma. After all, Ishant Sharma never takes wickets. Not just identifying the bowling pool will resolve our miseries. It is important that the same set of bowlers play all the 4 test matches to get the rhythm/combination/chemistry going (like Panesar, Anderson and Swann played almost all test matches in tandem). It is a no brainer that Dhoni takes his spot as wicket keeper batsmen. Now what left to address is the batting setup. Pujara, Kohli and Tendulkar are sure shot to take their spots. That leaves the two openers place vulnerable. Gambir and Sehwag can break into side only by reputation and not by performances. May be it is time to drop one of them and blood Rahane. But to do that with authority, Rahane should play the reminder of ODI’s.

Rahane, Gambir/Sehwag, Pujara, Tendulkar, Kohli, Dhoni, Ashwin, B Kumar, Ojha, Chawla/Shami Ahmed/Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav

For now, the above would be my test line up for the Aussie series. Let’s see, if this goes a makeover during the course of the remaining ODI’s. Hopefully we would be able to boil down to our captaincy candidate by then.

Bottom line: Wishing you all a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year. May this New Year bring better fortune to Indian Cricket.
