It is TIME now...

 This is to follow up with my preview. In the preview, I confidently expected India to level the series. Well, India was pretty much on course to level the series until 2 days (end of 2^nd day of 2^nd & Final Test) ago.  With a day to go in the final test match, NOW, it would be imprudent to expect India level the series. (Again not to forget, Cricket is a glorious game of uncertainty) 

Before any introspection, let’s rewind the tape. Teams in alien conditions mostly start on back foot. India’s story wasn’t any different. First Innings of the first test, India allowed New Zealand to run away with big total. Thanks to those drop catches that proved culprit. McCullum, Willimason & Anderson all pounced on the opportunities awarded to them and made India pay with 503. Again, Indian batsmen first outing in New Zeland wasn’t any special, when they were bowled out 300 short of opposition total. Special thanks to Indian batsman for attempting extravagant strokes little too early and causing their own downfall. Good players learn from their mistakes quickly. Indian players learnt too. The catches that went begging in the first innings found safety net in fielder’s hands in the second innings. As a result, India routed New Zealand for 105. Chasing a target excess of 400, Indian batsman spent time at the crease. That resulted in runs on the board. The lower order showed better application this time. Rather be bogged down to the second new ball, the batsmen surprised the opposition with an offensive play. After an enthralling battle, India lost the match by meagre 40 runs. Though the result ended in New Zealand’s favor, India walked into the second test with head high. Importantly, Indian players had come to terms. Even the batsman like Shikar Dhawan who has been found wanting in bouncy pitches had learnt the trade (at a most important juncture of his career and this series). It was truly impossible to believe India to lose the second test before the start of the match.

Much to the expectation, India started the proceedings well in the Second Test. Won the important toss and allowed the opposition in. They then bundled New Zealand inside 200. This was followed by disciplined batting that allowed India to post a total of 438. A total that is good enough to inflict innings defeat. Everything was falling in place when New Zealand was floundering at 92/5 during their effort to wipe the lead. And then, the match changed course. A couple of drop chances, McCullum in the company of Watling (now Neesham) reminding the historic Calcutta test. You read it right. New Zealand are sitting pretty at 578/6 (McCullum 281*, Watling 129, Neeshan 67*) with a 325 lead and a day to play. It would be imprudent to expect India level the series. We will have our answers tomorrow this time. I feel New Zealand win is a more deserving result to this test match.

I don’t want to introspect technical as many know, where India lost track. Dropped Catches, Defensive Captaincy, Flat Deck… (Feel free to fill up the blanks).

For teams to win matches, delivery should come from both Top and Bottom line. During the Tours of England and Australia (2011-2012), it was very evident that the bottom line was more of the issue to the problem. This was reconfirmed when India lost the home series to England (2012). This bottom line issues were addressed over the course of 2 years by selectors and some senior players took the onus on themselves. We witnessed, Dravid, Laxman & Tendulkar retirement. Sehwag, Gambir, Harbhajan, Yuvraj ouster. Bloated Zaheer was shown the exit while a fit Zaheer was welcomed. And then a revamped bottom line (except for few heads) delivered excellent results at home against Australia and West Indies (2013). Again for home series, the management has little work to do as skills of players are sufficient to trump average opposition. But the true test lies only outside Asia. Big question mark hung around the heads of the young Indian team before the Tour of South Africa. To be fair, the players displayed promise despite the result pointed other way at South Africa. The ongoing series against New Zealand (NZ leading 1-0 as of now) is more of an affirmation to the players promise.

For India, the bottom line seems to be solidifying every growing day. I've no doubts about the quality of this young Indian side representing India. The Time has arrived to introspect the Top line. I second Monga's article.

Bottom line: Now that the young Indian side is promising, it is not a bad idea to hand over the responsibility of managing themselves to a young Indian Captain. I would like to start with Pujara for tests. He is the most experienced player (first class) in this format of the game.

Tests begin at Kiwi Land...

Another abroad Test Series for India to begin today. Will India’s performance in the ODI series have any impact in the Test series? Not necessary. And I don’t think so. Definitely the performance of the India’s Test Side at South Africa was stark contrast to the performance of the ODI unit against the same opposition. If recent past is any indicator, we already got our answers.

 

At the same time, can’t hide the disappointment of India’s abysmal performance in the ODI’s. Suresh Raina and Ishanth Sharma’s ouster from the XI during the course of NZ series was one positive. Not sure, if India has moved on from Raina and Ishanth yet. They better do. Rayudu looked alright in his brief opportunities. He could have made the most out of it with a big fifty. Never mind. Ashwin and Jadeja’s performance with the bat was eye brow rising. Can, India bank on them and play a batsman less? Your guess is as good as mine.The idea of Virat Kohli opening the innings in the 4^th ODI sounded bitter. The lad is well on course to make a name for himself at No.3. Why fiddle with it? Luckily, India put him back to No.3 in the final ODI. From the looks of it, Dhawan’s place is surely hanging. If Dhawan does not have a good outing in the Test Series at NZ, he will be replaced both from Test and ODI squad without a lot of noise.

 

As much India disappointed, glad to see the ascendancy of Kiwis. I would say Kiwis were kind enough to India by not fielding Corey Anderson in the final two ODI’s. The side is well poised before the World Cup. By all means, they make it to the Semi Finals of the World Cup’s regularly. This time the tournament is to be played at home. So, NZ should make hay while sun shines.

 

Coming back to the preview of the Test Series, India cannot expect to start as favorites though. But one can expect India to draw the series against Kiwis.

 

It will be interesting to see what combination India will field for the first test. For starters, Ashwin may have already lost his place to Jadeja. To be precise, he lost his place to Jadeja at Durban. Now that Jadeja had a good outing with the bat in the ODI’s, Ashwin’s wait in the sidelines is likely to extend. Again, it will be exciting to see who will don the 3^rd seamer role? Ishanth Sharma did not have a bad Test Series at all at South Africa (decent series is a better way to put it). It is only logical he should hold on to his place. But the dislike for Ishanth Sharma is growing every day. May be the team management could mull for a change. B Kumar did not do anything commendable in the ODI series to eclipse Ishanth Sharma for the 3^rd seamer slot. So won’t be surprised if one of Ishwar Pandey/Umesh Yadav gets to play as the 3^rd seamer. I’m backing Ishwar Pandey as he brings the height factor of Ishanth Sharma. While, Shami Ahmed is adequate for not considering Umesh Yadav.

Dhawan, Vijay, Pujara, Kohli, R Sharma, Rahane, Dhoni, Jadeja, Zaheer Khan, Shami Ahmed, Ishawar Pandey

 

Bottom line: India should level the series (1-1)

Is time running out???

The recent losses of India in the ODI’s (0-2 to SA, down 0-2 to NZ already) are not going well with the followers. I’m surprised fans are getting impatient sooner compared to the tolerance exhibited when India was clearly on downward spiral for a prolonged duration in the longer format. By no means, I’m backing India’s losses now. At the same time, impatience of fans is understandable. There is not much time left before the World Cup 2015.

Looking at the FTP schedule, India has 3 more ODI’s at NZ, minimum of 4 ODI’s in the Asia Cup at Bangladesh, 5 ODI’s at England, probably 5 more ODI’s at Australia too. Roughly 20 ODI’s before the World Cup of which only 13 ODI’s (played at NZ, England, Australia) can be termed meaningful preparation. Dhoni made it very clear that he is going to lead India in the 2015 World Cup.

The questions that hamper are…

Is his army good to defend the title?

If not, who are the weak links?

Can these weak links get better with tutoring time?

If not, do we have enough time to bring new players and groom them?

Let the introspection begin…

There are definitely some questionable places in the side. So, let’s start with the OUTS.

Raina

If a player like Dhawan needs more time to settle in the side, it is understandable. But not Raina!!! Raina has been with the Indian side for little more than 5 years, played about 200 ODIs, played every condition, played every opponent, played almost in every possible slot, but still his batting is found wanting. Except being an outstanding fielder and a utility bowler, there is not too much in favor of Raina. I think by end of this NZ series (if he does not come up with stupendous + consistent performance with the bat from here), he will be shown the door. It is not only my personal opinion; the public noise is also getting louder on Raina’s ouster. Yuvi is a better alternative than Raina. I pretty much know Yuvi is never out of the equation. I’m just trying to compare apples to apples. If we start looking for Raina like players, may be Sehwag is handy. Sehwag can be useful bowler, better bat than Raina and of course an awful fielder. However, India does not need the Sehwag with the current attitude. Raina will/should be out.

Ishant Sharma

He is losing his pace, failing to discomfort batsman (leave alone picking wickets) and getting clobbered. It is only a matter of time before Aaron/Yadav or someone else seals his spot. Ishanth will be out.

Ashwin

Ashwin has about 75 ODI’s under his belt and he has been a regular feature since the World Cup 2011. I’m not sure if Ashwin has it in him to be in the ODI side as a lead spinner. Definitely his performances in the recent ODI’s (abroad) have been very ordinary. Break thru’s does not seem to be coming. His batting style does not have the wherewithal to produce low order cameos. At the same time, India does not have too many choices for the role of lead off spinner. Either India should go back to Harbhajan or introduce Parvez Rasool sooner than later. From the context of running short out of time, luck may favor Ashwin’s persistence. But I think, Rasool should be ventured in the Asia cup and persisted in England Series to evaluate between Ashwin and Rasool for the World Cup 2015. So, Ashwin May be In, May be Out.

Shikar Dhawan

I know Test performances are not a metric to evaluate a player in ODI format. Dhawan was definitely found wanting in the Test Series at South Africa. And the shadow of failure in the South Africa Test series seems to be rubbing him in the ODI’s at NZ too. Again these are very early years in his career and it is only fair he gets a decent run. In the current political cloud, the odds of Dhawan featuring in the World Cup 2015 appears bright than Gambir. However, I’m personally not convinced with both of them. Pujara could be a better alternate compared to Dhawan or Gambir in alien condition. He has the appetite to bat long and possibly can be a better partner to suit the stroke players like Kohli, Yuvi and Dhoni to follow. Even a youth like Unmukt Chand is not a bad idea, especially after following the rise of De Kock. Shikar Dhawan, May be out.

Rohit Sharma

He is another player consistently annoying public for failing to live up to reputation. The latest joke running rounds, Pappu can’t bat sala!!! No doubt he is a talent and scoring double century is no joke by any means. It is very obvious Dhoni want him to replace Sehwag. And, Sharma has all the ingredients to replace Sehwag. However, talent is different, performance is different. Since his partner Shikar Dhawan is also not doing any great, Rohit Sharma is likely to get an extended run up. In all probability, he will feature in the World Cup and these 20 odd ODI’s will be considered as a tutoring time. Even though public sentiment is largely against Rohit Sharma, he May be In.

B Kumar

Swing is King. It is interesting to see how he performs in NZ and England. Except P Kumar and Zaheer Khan, there are not many in the circuit to challenge him. B Kumar May be In, May be Out.

In’s

R Jadeja

Sirji has proved with his bowling as why he should be in a line up. However the all-round tag associated with him is the only concern. As an all-rounder he should be out. But, the public has started seeing him as a bowler these days. Sirji, is in.

Rahane

Rahane, finally break into the XI. He looked good in the second ODI against NZ until he got out. The reminder of the ODI’s before the World Cup will be the nurturing time. Rahane, In.  

Needs

Going into the World Cup, India need a fast bowling all-rounder. There are not many choices in store except Irfan Pathan and Roger Binny. Unfortunately Irfan Pathan is caught up in the tussle of becoming an all-rounder Vs bowler. If Irfan Pathan wants to play as a bowler, the odds of him making the cut in the side is very limited. Again, we are yet to see Binny. I just wish one of them become that all-rounder India badly needs for this World Cup campaign. And for that to happen, the least one of them should make a head start. We should see more of Binny from here. It is important Binny turn into that Robin Singh.

Options

With Raina & Ishanth clearly marked out, Ashwin & Dhawan classified as May be outs, what are the options for replacements?

Both openers (Sharma (may be in), Dhawan (may be out)) barely making an impact, there is a good chance we should see a new face. My personal bet would be Pujara, but it is not a bad idea to venture a youth like Unmukt Chand. I’m not sure if India has time to try both Pujara and Chand in the space of 1 year. Odds are good Chand should start fresh post World Cup. So, Pujara is likely to don the role of opener soon.

Also it is not a bad idea to venture somebody like Sanju Samson or Vijay Zol in the mix for the World Cup for a middle order slot. Again for that India should start playing Rayudu before eliminating him from the equation. And for that to happen, fall of Raina is imminent.

I feel Aaron, Yadav, Pandey (one of the fast bowlers) is surely making the cut ahead of Ishant Sharma.

We should see few changes coming soon.

At the beginning of the series if you were told, India will lose it 1-0, you would have taken it with both hands. After all, this Indian team on paper did not stand a chance against the World No.1. So, if India actually drew a match (which they could have won) and then lost a match (which they could have drawn) and eventually lost the series by 1-0, it is a bargain result. Some may argue that India is actually ranked No.2. But ranking and reality are different entities. Mind you, it is battling the trio of Steyn, Morkel and Philander on spicy wickets and getting out the likes of Smith, Amla, Kallis, De Villiers and Du Plessis twice in a match. After following the side’s performance in this series, the verdict 1-0 suddenly appears disappointment. Thanks to some feisty performance by the young brigade, it actually tempted Indian supporters to believe that India could spring a surprise. In that context, “India disappointed” is an acceptable opinion. No matter what the result is, this team has more fire under the belly.

 

I personally felt India should have saved the second test. Some of the mistakes were very glaring. Soon after Steyn walked in as night watchman in the first innings, India should have taken the new ball. Taking the second new ball after 144 overs was hyper defensive. One of my friend jokingly remarked that “Dhoni is waiting to take two new balls at each end”. The way Zaheer Khan applied himself in the second innings, should have displayed the same maturity in the first innings too. Rahane looked very good at the other end and clearly running out of partners. Zaheer walked in only to play an atrocious shot to leave Rahane stranded. Dhoni should have played his natural game when Duminy and Peterson were operating in tandem. For the confidence and maturity displayed by Rahane in the first innings, he should have been sent ahead of Rohit Sharma in the second innings. And then the way Ravindra Jadeja got out in the second innings is unpardonable sin. Can’t believe he has few triple hundreds under his belt in first class cricket. Of course, the way he got out in the first innings of the bowling of Duminy was not a good sight too. And then, Rahane was in a hurry to get his 100 missed a trick or two in the second innings. He should have had little more confidence in Shami. Guess he will gain that maturity with time. Kohli and Zaheer got rough decisions. I don’t say all these would have definitely helped India to save the test match. But paying attention to small things always carry big payoff.

 

If you revisit the first match, it was India’s game all the way. South Africa came from nowhere and pulled the game out of the jaws of victory. The second test was South Africa’s game all the way. India should have returned the courtesy. Well, the least there were plenty of opportunities in taking to save the match. Despite disappointing, there are lots of positives to take consolation.

 

Here is a quick review of the players.

 

Vijay (6/10)

Vijay appears to be a horse for the long run. He has all the ingredients of an opener. The primary role of the opener is to blunt the new ball and make it easy for the stroke players to follow. Players like Sehwag, Hayden gave new dimension to the opening role is different story. But then they are once in a generation cricketers. Going back to basics, Vijay did his role well. 3 out of 4 innings, he made his opening role count. He easily batted 60 – 90 balls and blunted the new ball in 3 innings. 1 out of 4 innings, he made the start count by scoring 90+ score.

 

Dhawan (2/10)

Dhawan was a huge disappointment. He was walking wicket all the way. I guess he was caught up in two minds between aggressive stroke play and blunting the ball. In the end, he was found wanting on both counts. Unless he makes himself into a different cricketer for different conditions, there is a very little chance he will have long career. Being a left hander (not many challengers in the circuit right now) is his biggest advantage and some strong scores at home should give him that bandwidth for the management to persist. Being a smart fellow, I’m sure he will find his way. If Dhawan fails, I guess, India would prefer a third generation cricketer like Zol rather a first generation cricketer like Gambir for a left hander in the mix of things. Also as a close in fielder, missing out a couple of sharp chances at silly mid-off was a disappointment too. Somehow Dhawan manage to bat about 80 balls in the final innings of the test earns him 2 points.  

 

Pujara & Kohli (8/10)

Pujara and Kohli are future of Pillars of Indian cricket without a doubt. Both seem to make an identity for themselves at No.3 and 4.

 

Rohit Sharma (1/10)

Sharma is another disappointment joining the ranks of Dhawan. 2 out his 4 dismissals were free bees to opponent. Cheesy and Classy stroke play alone is not sufficient. Substance is the need of the hour. Hopefully, New Zealand tour should help him make up for his mistakes. And the argument with Steyn in the second innings was absolutely not required. There is a reason why he is the World No.1 bowler. You just have to keep your mouth shut and let the bat do the talking.

 

Rahane (7/10)

Rahane is another find of this tour. I personally preferred Rahane ahead of Rohit Sharma in the batting order in the second innings of the second test. Very disappointed he could not complete his century. A lot has to be attributed to lack of maturity. He failed to convince Zaheer Khan to give him company in the first innings of the second test. More knocks like the last 3 innings will give confidence to tail-enders to respect Rahane and give company.

 

Ashwin (3/10)

Ashwin was utter failure with the ball. I prefer to blame him for India not winning the first test. If he had picked a couple of wickets here and there in the first test in each innings, I have no doubts India would have won it. He earns points for his potential to become that all-rounder India is searching for a very long time. How will he find a spot in the XI is the question? Possibly an opener. It is only a speculative thought.  

 

Ravindra Jadeja (7/10)

Without a doubt he should be the choice of first spinner for India. He gives better support to the fast bowlers compared to Ashwin. He has immaculate control of line and length with amazing consistency. Also delivers with wickets than meagerly bowling his quota of overs. With Jadeja, we somehow tend to associate the all-rounder tag and then he turns out to be a mug with the bat. But he is easily the best slow bowler. Kudos to Dhoni!!! Somehow he managed to sell Jadeja to us.

 

Ishant Sharma (6/10)

Somehow, people have a very negative opinion about Ishanth Sharma. Even I wasn’t fond of him until during this series. In here, he surely delivered. He extracted bounce, regularly troubled the batsman, provided critical breakthrough. Yeah, it is disappointment that he could not sweep away wickets like Steyn or Philander. I doubt if he could be that match winning bowler. But definitely he can be that workhorse for India like a Peter Siddle for Australia.

 

Shami Ahmed (6/10)

Shami is another find of this tour. He provided important breakthroughs, bowling at good pace disconcerting batsman here and there with reverse swing. He did a good support job. It would have been a turning point for him and India if he had run thru South Africa with reverse swing. Again, these are early days. Sure he will turn into a huge asset in the future. He is the most likely candidate to lead India’s bowling battery after Zaheer Khan.

 

Zaheer Khan (5/10)

For his comeback, Zaheer did an amazing job. Still the Zaheer’s zing was found missing.

 

Dhoni (5/10)

Dhoni as a batsman is without a doubt failure. He could not capitalize when Robin Peterson & Duminy were operating in the first innings of the second test. Had he played to his strengths, India would have done better than 375. He was found defensive in captaincy most periods except when he opted to bat after winning the toss in both tests. Again, Dhoni has been defensive in tests for a very long time. To me, India should have gone for the win in the final test of the Windies tour in 2011. Giving the benefit of doubt to Dhoni, I guess he will do more positive plays once he understands his boys better and start believing in them that they will step up and deliver.

 

India scores 6/10 despite losing the series. I’m happy with it. There is definitely light at the end of the tunnel.

 

Bottom line: Thank you Kallis. You are the greatest all-rounder of our times. It was a privilege to follow your career. Two greats signed off in 2013. That leaves Shiv the lone survivor. His career may come to an end in 2014.

"நீ கவலைப்படாதேம்மா, மாப்பிள்ளை கூட நானும் போய் எல்லாம் முடிச்சிக் குடுத்துட்டுத் தான் வருவேன்" என்று உறுதியளித்தார் அவரின் குடும்ப வக்கீல் சதாசிவம்.

பத்மநாபன் "அந்த பாலா எங்க இருக்கான்னு விசாரிச்சீங்களா?

"அவன் மலேசியாவுக்கு ஓடிட்டான் மாமா. அதுவுமில்லாம பாலா பேர்ல எதுவுமே இல்லை. எல்லாமே என் பேர்ல தான் இருக்கு"

"திருட்டு ராஸ்கல்"

"அது மட்டுமில்லை மாமா, அந்த நல்ல கண்ணு வீட்ல அவன் தங்கச்சிக்கு சம்பந்தம் வேற பேசியிருக்காங்க. இப்போ தான் கதிர்வேல் விசாரிச்சுச் சொன்னான்".

"துரோகி. இதுக்குப் பின்னாடி நல்லகண்ணு தான் இருக்கானா? நான் பார்த்துக்கறேன்" என்று இன்னமும் ஆவேசமானார் பத்மநாபன்.

"சரி மாமா, நான் எப்போ போகணும்?"

"கார் ரெடியா இருக்கு. 5 மணிக்கு பிளைட். இன்னும் 15 நிமிஷத்தில கிளம்பணும்" என்றார் சதாசிவம்.

"என்ன அஜய் ஜி, தொடர்ந்து விக்கெட் எடுத்துக்கிட்டே இருக்கீங்க?" என்று நக்கலுடன் தொலைபேசியில் கேட்டார் ராத்தோர்.

"நீங்க மட்டும்? சிக்ஸரா அடிச்சு நொறுக்கறீங்களே? அந்த ராதேவை எங்களுக்கு முன்னாடியே கைது பண்ணிட்டீங்களே?"

"பின்னே? 10 வருஷத்துக்கு முன்னாடி எங்களுக்கு முன்னாடி நீங்க தென்னாப்பிரிக்கா போய் கைது பண்ணலியா? இப்போ எங்க நேரம்"

"அது சரி, இப்படி மேல இருக்கறவங்களுக்காக எல்லாரையும் சும்மா கைது பண்ணி என்ன பிரயோஜனம்? இதுல நமக்கு என்ன லாபம்?"

"கேம் அவங்களது.. நமக்கு கூலி மட்டும் தான் உண்டு. கொஞ்சம் வெயிட்டான கூலி"

"என்னவோ போங்க ஜி. ஒரு விறுவிறுப்பே இல்லை"

"சும்மா வேடிக்கை பார்த்து என்ஜாய் பண்ணுங்க ஜி. இவனுங்க எப்படி அடிச்சுக்கறாங்கன்னு பார்க்கலாம்"

"அன்னிக்கே சொன்னேன். நீ கேட்கலை. இப்போ அழுது என்ன பிரயோஜனம்? - கொடைக்கானலில் நடந்த அதே காட்சி. அங்கே மனைவி கேட்ட கேள்விகளை இங்கே கணவன் கேட்டான்.

"ரகு ஜி இப்படி பண்ணுவார்னு நான் எதிர்பார்க்கலை"

"என் பயமெல்லாம் இப்போ என்னோட பர்சனல் பிசினெசைப் பற்றித் தான்.

"புரியலை"

"நம்ம டீம் வீரர்கள் என் கம்பெனில ஒப்பந்தம் பண்ணியிருக்கறது இந்த விசாரணையில் வெளியே வரும். அது இவங்க கண்ணை உறுத்தும்" என்று மொஹிந்தர் கூறும்போதே டெலிபோன் ஒலித்தது.

"சொல்லுங்க பத்மநாபன் ஜி. இப்போ தான் நியூஸ் பார்த்தேன்"

"அதெல்லாம் ஒரு பக்கம் இருக்கட்டும். மீடியா முன்னாடி சாமர்த்தியமா பேசிக்கோ. உனக்கு சம்பந்தம் இல்லாத மாதிரி காமி. எதையாவது விளையாட்டாப் பேசி சொதப்பிடாதே"

"அப்படியெல்லாம் செய்வேனா? தொடர்ந்து 8 தடவை தோத்து அவமானப்பட்ட கூட நான் நல்லாதானே சமாளிச்சேன்?

"தெரியும். சொல்ல வேண்டியது என் கடமை. ஜாக்கிரதை"

மீடியா கேட்ட அனைத்து கேள்விகளுக்கும் சென்னை அணி தனது அணி அல்ல என்றும், அது தனது சிமெண்ட் நிறுவனத்தின் சொத்து என்றும் ரகுவிற்கு எவ்விதப் பொறுப்பும் கிடையாது என்றும் திரும்பத் திரும்ப பதிலளித்துக் கொண்டே இருந்தார் பத்மநாபன். அதே வேளையில் விசாரணைக்காக மும்பை சென்ற ரகுவை மும்பை போலீஸ் ஒரு வார ரிமாண்டில் வைத்துக் கொண்ட செய்தி திரையின் கீழே பிரேக்கிங் நியூசாக பளிச்சிட்டது..

தன் 8 மாதக் குழந்தையை கையில் வைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்த பாரு சுக்கு நூறாக உடைந்து அழ ஆரம்பித்தாள்.

 6 மாதங்களுக்குப் பிறகு....

உள்ளே சென்ற அனைவரும் இரண்டு வாரங்களுக்குப் பிறகு வெளியே வந்தனர்.

ரகுவிற்கும் ராதேவிற்கும் வெளிநாடு செல்லத் தடை விதிக்கப்பட்டது. அருகே உள்ள காவல் நிலையத்திற்குச் சென்று தினமும் கையெழுத்திட வேண்டுமென்றும் உத்தரவு பிறப்பிக்கப் பட்டிருந்தது.

உப்புக்குச் சப்பாக நடந்த இறுதிப் போட்டியில் மும்பை சென்னையை வீழ்த்தி வெற்றி பெற்றது. மொஹிந்தர் பெரிதாக அலட்டிக்கொள்ளவில்லை.

பத்மநாபன் தற்காலிகமாக பதவி விலகி தனக்கு வேண்டியவர்கள் மூலம் விசாரணை கமிஷன் அமைத்தார். தான் குற்றவாளியல்ல என்று தனக்குத் தானே அறிவித்துக் கொண்டு மீண்டும் பதவிக்கு வந்தார். ஆனால் அவர் அமைத்த விசாரணைக் குழு செல்லுபடியாகாது என உயர்நீதிமன்றம் தீர்ப்பு அளித்தது.

பாரு முழு நேரமாக தொழிலையும் குழந்தைகளையும் மட்டும் பார்த்து வந்தாள்.

ரகு பேச்சை சுத்தமாக குறைத்திருந்தான். சமீபத்தில் நடந்த பிரிமியர் லீக் அணிகளுக்கான கூட்டத்தில் கூட தான் பேசாமல் இருப்பதற்கான உரிமையை பயன்படுத்திக் கொண்டான்.

உள்ளே சென்ற ராஜஸ்தான் வீரர்கள் இருவரும் தத்தம் கிராமங்களுக்குச் சென்றனர். அதில் நிச்சயிக்கப்பட்ட படி ஒருவருக்குக் கோலாகலமாக திருமணம் நடந்தது.

ஸ்ரீகாந்த் சமீபத்தில் தன் காதலி கீதாவைத் திருமணம் செய்து கொண்டான். இந்திய கிரிக்கெட் குழு தன்னை நிரந்தரமாக விளையாடத் தடை செய்து விட்டதால் மீண்டும் தன் சினிமாக் கனவுகளுக்கு உயிர் கொடுக்க ஆரம்பித்திருந்தான்.

விசாரணைக்காக அழைக்கப்பட்ட ஸ்வராஜ் சில தகவல்களை அளித்ததுடன் பெட்டிங் சட்டமாக்கப் பட வேண்டுமென்று நியாயம் பேசினான்.

பத்மநாபன் லலித்தையும் நிரந்தரமாகத் தடை செய்து விட்டார். ஆனால் லலித் ஜெய்ப்பூர் மாநில கிரிக்கெட் சங்கத் தேர்தலில் போட்டியிடத் தயாராகிக் கொண்டிருந்தான்.

ஷயன் கிரிக்கெட்டிலிருந்து முழுமையாக ஓய்வு பெற்றுக் கொண்டான் - நாடே அழுதது.

ஆரம்பத்தில் மீடியா முன் சற்றுத் தடுமாறிய மொஹிந்தர் தன் இளமைப் பட்டாள அணியின் மூலம் சில்வண்டு அணிகளுடன் விளையாடி தொடர் வெற்றி பெற்று அவர்கள் வாயை அடைத்தான்.

சென்னை அணியின் தற்காலிக மேலாளராக கதிர்வேல் நியமிக்கப் பட்டான்.

தன் மகன் செய்த துரோகத்திற்கு பாலாவின் தாயார் பத்மநாபனிடம் மன்னிப்புக் கேட்டார். எவ்வளவோ முயன்றும் பாலாவுடன் தொடர்பு கொள்ள முடியவில்லை எனவும் வருந்தினார்.

டெல்லி கமிஷனர் அஜய்யும், ராத்தோரும் தாங்கள் சமீத்தில் "வாங்கிய" பண்ணை வீட்டில் குடும்பத்தினருடன் விடுமுறையைக் கழித்தனர்.

பெரியவர் வழக்கம் போல் வியாபாரிகளுக்கு ஏற்றுமதி லாபம் வரவேண்டி வெங்காயத்தைப் பதுக்குமாறு உத்தரவு பிறப்பித்தார்.


அப்புறம்... ஆங்,....பாவம் ரசிகர்கள். அவர்களுக்கு அடிக்கடி "மெடுலா ஒம்ப்லகட்டாவில்" அடிபடுவதால் எல்லாவற்றையும் மறந்து வெங்காய விலையேற்றத்தைக் கண்டித்துக் கொண்டே கிரிக்கெட்டை ரசித்தனர்.




ஆட்டம் தற்காலிகமாக முடிந்தது....

Before we move into the second test, let’s quickly recap the first test. Without an element of doubt, a draw result to the first test surprised the entire cricket fraternity. Firstly not many expected South Africa to survive four and half sessions in the second innings on a 4^th and 5^th day wicket. Even if South Africa survived, not many counted them to go after the leather to chase a target of 458. Let’s say, somebody still counted South Africa to hunt down the target, I’m sure they wouldn’t have anticipated South Africa to shut the shop when the victory was only a hop away. Well, it was an extremely intriguing test match where both side don’t deserve to lose. At the same time, both teams shutting shop in the fear not to lose a test match explains the value of stakes involved. Personally, I've no complaints. I’m very happy to see Cricket emerging winner. I’m happy to see teams, giving utmost importance to a Test victory, rather winning/losing by virtue of impulsive/emotional decision. At the same time, I’m sure Indian fans were disappointed to see India not emerging winner here. Again, every one of Indian supporters would be extremely proud of this inexperienced team’s fighting effort in foreign soil.

On a closer introspection, I thought India shut the shop right after Tea (this time around South Africa scored 300). Indian field was set aggressive though, but the bowlers stopped attacking the stumps and made it batsman’s effort to take chance in order to make runs. Once South Africa went past 400 (with De Villiers & Du Plessis at the crease), India spread the field too. When the game was clearly drifting away from India hands, Ishanth Sharma produced a pivotal breakthrough to bowl out De Villiers and then Shami snapped Duminy quickly bringing India right back into the contest. But then, Du Plessis had planted his foot firm scoring only on the bad balls and allowed Philander to take charge of the proceedings. This left India no choice but to continue defensive play. When South Africa appeared cruising, Rahane produced a brilliant run out to dismiss Du Plessis which became enticing for India to attack. However, India continued defensive play and South Africa joined the party. When both teams stopped trying to win, it visibly hurt the fans. WHAT A TEST MATCH!!! After a very long time, we witnessed an outstanding match, leaving the fans and pundits to ponder the results and play.

On the blame game, I don’t find a better scape goat than Ashwin. If Ashwin had chipped in with few wickets (particularly in the 2^nd innings) providing the much needed support to the seam bowlers, India would be leading the series 1-0 now. Again, I’m not taking any credits away from South African batsman for the way they batted in the second innings. But then, Ashwin’s failure with the ball reminds the story of the past. At England, Bhajji failed to provide that support/breakthroughs, similarly Ashwin failed at Australia.

After an absorbing Test, the series appears to be evenly poised. In my series preview, I predicted South Africa to win this series 1-0. Now, I strongly retract my statement.

As the toss took place at Durban, yet again India delivered the first punch. India opted to bat first (after all, everyone knows how famous Durban is for producing lively tracks).  And then India dropped Ashwin in place of Jadeja. That conveyed two things. Firstly, Ashwin failed to deliver as a bowler at Wanderers for which he pays the price. Knowing how critical Ashwin’s batting could be lower down the order (especially with an inexperienced lineup), Dhoni still decided to leave him out. This shows the amount of faith the Captain has on the young crop of batsman. India’s definitely got it right. At the same, the rest of the batsman must have got the message that their place is not a guarantee. After all, Ashwin is as good as any of those specialist batsmen (in my books).

Back to the test match, Durban hardly lived up to its reputation. This is an even slower wicket than Wanderers. This must be pleasant surprise for the Indian camp. Now, it is very obvious that South Africans are terrified of the defeat. They don’t want a lively wicket to hurt their course and possibly spoil the party of Kallis retirement too. Between, who expected Kallis retirement coming?

With slightly favorable batting conditions than the first test, Vijay made most of the opportunity with his undefeated 91 at the close of first day's play. Pujara looked solid as ever. And then Steyn, delivering barrage of short pitched stuff to force the umpires to call off play (sighting poor light) was the most engrossing period of play. India once again emerged winner during that period of play. 

Bottomline: South African’s are petrified. Dhoni is in charge. Great days ahead of Indian Cricket!!!

ஜெய்ப்பூர் மைதானம்.

ஜெய்ப்பூர் வீரர்கள் பயிற்சியில் தீவிரமாக ஈடுபட்டிருந்தனர். ஷீலாவும் ஸ்வராஜும் மடிக்கணினியை பார்த்த வண்ணம் எதைப்பற்றியோ ஆலோசித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தனர். அப்பொழுது இரண்டு கைகளிலும் இனிப்பு டப்பாக்களை ஏந்தியபடி ஓடி வந்தான் ஸ்ரீகாந்த்.

"நண்பர்களே, எல்லாரும் ஒரு நிமிஷம் வாங்க. மேடம், நீங்களும் வாங்க.". எல்லாரும் வியர்வையைத் துடைத்துக் கொண்டு அவனை சூழ்ந்தனர்.

"ஒரு வழியா போராடி கீதா அப்பா கிட்ட சம்மதம் வாங்கியாச்சு. இன்னும் இரண்டு நாள் கழிச்சு நிச்சயதார்த்தம். " என்று மூச்சு விடாமல் ஒப்பித்தான்.

அனைவரும் சந்தோஷத்தில் "ஹுர்ரே..."என்று உற்சாகக் குரல் எழுப்பி அவனை அலாக்காகத் தூக்கி இறக்கினர்.

கோகுல் அவனருகே வந்து "வாழ்த்துக்கள் ஸ்ரீ," என்று ஒரு இனிப்பை அவன் வாயில் ஊட்டினான்.

ஷீலா, "இதெல்லாம் சரி தான். அதுக்காக பயிற்சிக்கு வராம இருக்கறது தப்பு ஸ்ரீ. நீ ஒரு முக்கியமான பௌலர். அதை மறந்துடாதே" என்று அவளும் தன் பங்குக்கு அவன் வாயை இனிப்பால் அடைத்தாள்.

"அதெல்லாம் கரெக்டா பண்ணிடுவேன் மேடம்"

"ஆனால் இந்த பாலா பய..."என்று கூறி முடிக்கும் முன்,

"டீமுக்கு அவன் மேனேஜரா இல்ல நீங்களா? சொன்னதை செய்ங்க" என்று உச்சச்த்தாயியில் கத்தினார் பத்மநாபன்.

மேற்கொண்டு எதுவும் பேசாமல் நடையைக் கட்டினான் ரகு.

"ஆமாம், கம்பெனில கொஞ்சம் ஷேர்ஸ் விக்கறதுன்னு முடிவு பண்ணியிருக்கேன். நீ வந்த விஷயத்தைச் சொல்லு"

"டீமுக்கு இந்த வருஷச் செலவுக்குப் பணம் கொடுக்கணும். மார்க்கெட்டிங் பொருட்கள் எல்லாம் வந்திடுச்சு. பேமென்ட் பண்ணலேன்னா நாறடிச்சிடுவாங்க"

"நம்ம அக்கௌண்ட்ல இருக்குமே?"

"எந்த அக்கௌண்ட்ல? உங்க பர்சனல் அக்கௌண்ட் தவிர எல்லாம் காலி"

"நீ என்ன சொன்னே?"

"ஓகேன்னு சொல்லிட்டேன்."

"என்கிட்டே ஒரு வார்த்தை கேட்க மாட்டியா?"

"எதுக்கு கேட்கணும்? நமக்குத் தான் எல்லா மேட்ச்சுக்கும் 10 பாஸ் கிடைக்குதே?'

"அதுக்காக? எவனை வேணும்னாலும் உட்கார வைப்பியா?"

"ஹலோ, அவன் நம்ம நண்பன்"

"மச்சி, போன தடவையே சொல்லிட்டேன். ஏகப்பட்ட கமிட்மென்ட் ஆயிருக்கு இந்த தடவை. அப்படியெல்லாம் பின் வாங்க முடியாது" என்று உறுதியாகக் கூறினான் பாலா.

"அப்போ எதுவானாலும் நீயே பண்ணிக்க, என்கிட்டே எந்த உதவியும் எதிர்பார்க்காதே"

"ஒரு நிமிஷம் இரு மச்சி. ராதேவுக்கு போன் போடறேன், நீயே சொல்லிடு"

எதிர் முனையில் ராதே வந்தான். "சொல்லுங்க பாலா ஜி, என்ன விஷயம்?"

"ராதே பாய், ரகு இந்த வருஷம் நமக்கு சப்போர்ட் பண்ண மாட்டாராம், அதை உன் கிட்ட சொல்றதுக்குத் தான் போன் பண்ணினேன். அவரும் இங்க தான் இருக்கார்"

மகேஷின் முன் அழாத குறையாக சோகத்துடன் அமர்ந்திருந்தான் கலிங்கா. எதிரே மேஜையில் சிதறிய செல்போன்கள்.

"சார் இந்த ஒரு தடவை மன்னிச்சிடுங்க" என்று மன்றாடினான் கலிங்கா. மகேஷின் பார்வையில் அனல்.

"மன்னிப்பா? உன்னையெல்லாம் ஓட ஓட அடிச்சு விரட்டணும்யா"

"தம்பி, உங்களுக்கு இங்கே என்ன குறைச்சல்? மத்த டீம் மாதிரியா நாங்க உங்களை நடத்தறோம்?" என்று விளக்க ஆரம்பித்தார் சுக்லா..

"நீங்க என்னண்ணே இவன் கூட பேச்சு வார்த்தை நடத்திக்கிட்டிருக்கீங்க? எனக்கு வர்ற ஆத்திரத்துக்கு அப்படியே.."

We have arrived... Are you ready???

“India surprised even the most optimistic fan” is a better way to put it. To the perennial doubters who give a ^&$#@ to the youth brigade (especially in the foreign soil) this is a strong wake up call. For the No.1 side in World Cricket and its followers this is a rude shock. Finally for those who still grieve for Dravid, Laxman, Tendulkar retirements, Hope is the message.

This has been an outstanding test cricket performance by India in the foreign soil after a long time. Well the game is not over yet and 2 more days of play left. India is sitting pretty with 300 runs lead and 8 wickets on hand. Also riding the wave are the future pillars of Indian Cricket, Kohli & Pujara. If Kohli’s first innings century bailed out India from falling heap, Pujara’s century in the second innings, more or less took South Africa out of the context. It appears Pujara is all at ease to turn this into a double ton, while Kohli can complement his first innings ton with another ton. Batting an hour after lunch on Day 4 is likely to give India a lead of 450 runs. And then 4.5 sessions left to play, coupled with a wearing wicket –Indian bowlers have enough time to stomp South Africa.

A quick review of India’s performance so far…

Vijay looked solid in both innings. However, his individual scores did not reveal his important contribution of grinding the new ball in both innings. At the same time he failed to capitalize when Amla dropped him at short leg in the first innings. Great players make the opposition pay for their mistakes. Mind you, Pujara in his second innings, at around 50 also got a reprieve when Tahir dropped a sitter of his own bowling. Pujara cashed on the life and made South Africa pay for the mistake by scoring 135* with more to come. At the same time, Vijay is here to stay not because he is a Super King, not because Srinivasan is the president, but because he has it in him to grind the new ball even in alien conditions. On the contrary, Dhawan looked totally out of sort in every aspect. He appeared to be a walking wicket, but then it is only his first test abroad. Since there are not too many left handed openers in the circuit whose names doing rounds and India is not looking back to Gambir, there is a good chance, Dhawan may get a long rope. Since he is very young, he will learn from his mistakes and come good in the days ahead.

Pujara and Kohli had already passed the auditions in India, now stamped their class. Pujara’s performance confirmed Dravid’s exit, while Kohli looked so much good at No.4 than a fading Tendulkar. Rohit Sharma floundered on the limited opportunity, but then not everybody performs in the same test match. At the same time, the way he got out in the first innings was not good scene to watch too. I’m sure he has better days ahead and proves that he has it in him to replace Very Very Special Laxman. After Ganguly retired nobody really sealed that spot. That spot was always available for grabs. Yuvraj, Raina all tried their hands unsuccessfully. Little Rahane playing a different genre of cricket may be that answer to the puzzle.

On the bowling front, India may have missed the genius of Kumble or the guile of Harbhajan (at prime), but Ashwin offers a different pedigree. He is surely an all-rounder that India has been looking for a very long time. At times, I felt Ashwin may be a better opener (compared to Dhawan) and give India an option to play 4 pacers or an additional spinner (when needed). Well, these are very early thoughts and don’t carry too much merit to be introspected immediately.

For the first time, I feel Indian pace battery looks so much better than yesteryears. Zak has the knack, Shami has the pace and the duo is able to reverse swing too. Finally after 50 tests, Ishanth Sharma is coming off age. A Kumble sort of personality is the missing link in the spin department.

With Morkel out of the test match, India is looking to possess a better bowling attack than South Africa in the second test. Ooops, I already concluded that India won the match.

It is highly unlikely India will lose from here. We have always been complaining about India not putting a fight during the 8-0 debacle. Let us see what the World No.1 have in them to fight in this test match

Bottom line: We are here. Let the world better be ready for us.
