BCCI's cheap gimmick!!! REALLY???

Recently, former English Cricketers slammed BCCI for not fielding a single spinner in England's first warm up match of the tour against India A on Oct 30, 2012.

Following is the India A squad for the match.

Suresh Raina (capt), Ambati Rayudu, M Vijay, Abhinav Mukund, Manoj Tiwary, Robin Bist, Ashok Menaria, Yuvraj Singh, Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Irfan Pathan, Ashok Dinda, Vinay Kumar, Parvinder Awana

As a follower, we understand that these matches are organized for the benefit of visiting team to acclimatize. At the same time, this game also serves a purpose to the home board. Ideally it is about evaluation of players for the few spots still open for grabs in the national side. In that aspect, the selectors has done everything correct in naming the above squad just before the national team selection. At this time the selectors are not in a hurry to evaluate spinners as Ashwin and Ojha have already sealed their place in the XI (Also performance of a spinner against England line up is not the best way to judge the talent). It is only the medium pace quadrant that may require re-dressing over the period of 4 test matches. Thus all of Irfan Pathan, Dinda, Vinay Kumar and Awana (waiting in line) are named in this side. If somebody questions the absence of Harbhajan, the answer lies in the absence itself. Harbhajan Singh is presented the whole Ranji season to prove his mettle. Playing one match here or there with eye brow rising performance is not going to revive his career straight away. This is a message to Harbhajan more than anybody else.

With respect to batsman in the squad, the openers Mukund, Vijay and Rahane are selected to evaluate as a backup/replacement to Sehwag/Gambir. Because Dhawan has planned his wedding during this time, he missed the party. And we all know there is one middle order spot definitely available for grabs in the Test XI. All of Yuvraj Singh, Tiwary, Bist, Maneria, Rayudu, Raina (potential candidates to grab that spot) are selected for evaluation purpose. However this also means Badrinath is out of the race for the middle order spot.

In every aspect, the above squad answers, India’s preparation to this series rather providing an opportunity to England for preparation. Anyways, Yuvraj and Raina will be bowling left arm spin and off spin for the benefit of English Batsman.

In the meantime, BCCI released the new contracts.

Wonder, how Munaf Patel earned a contract? I personally don’t see him featuring in Indian Team in any format of the game. Anyways, that is only my personal opinion.

IPL Saga

It is interesting to see the (surprise) emergence of Sun TV as the new owner of the Hyderabad franchise in IPL. As usual, Lalit Modi made noise with tweets as “IPL Team gifted to Srinivasan friends. It is a throw away price compared to what Sahara paid 2 years ago”. Come on Modi, Indian cricket followers still have common sense. The second best bid was only 69 Crores per annum compared to Sun TV’s 85. In that sense, Srinivasan’s friends are only scape goats. We do understand that Sahara and Kochi Tuskers paid huge amount to secure a franchise. But that was 2 years ago. Those were the days IPL was only 3 years old and investors were willing to spend any amount of money as everyone saw only the success side of IPL.

Today’s prices are determined by what happened next. BCCI attempted to terminate Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab. Thanks to Court, that these owners are still holding their franchise. The 4^th edition of IPL witnessed empty stands. Though two new teams joined the league for the 4^th edition, Kochi could not survive beyond. After 5^th year, the title sponsor DLF quit. Everyone knows the row Sahara had with BCCI, especially the pull out drama during last year’s auction. Today, Deccan Chronicles lost their ownership due to the debt incurred by running the franchise all these years. It is a pity Deccan could not even pay their players dues. Already everyone is keeping a close watch on Bangalore Royal Challengers, whose owner is under severe financial stress. At such a state, somebody paid 85 Crores per annum means they have taken a huge risk, BCCI should be more than happy about it.

மத்திய தர குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ஒரு அரசு அதிகாரி. அரசு இயந்திரத்தில் நடக்கின்ற அநியாயங்களைத் தட்டிக் கேட்கிறார். ஆனால் அவரால் பெரிசா ஒண்ணும் செய்ய முடியலை. அதனால் அரசாங்க பதவியை விட்டுவிட்டு மக்களோடு சேர்ந்து போராட முடிவெடுத்து வெளியே வர்றார். அவருக்குத் துணையாக சம சிந்தனை உடைய நிறைய நல்லவங்களும் அந்தப் போராட்டத்தில் சேர்ந்துக்கறாங்க. மக்கள் குரல் எழுப்பினால் அரசாங்கம் கேட்டுத் தான் ஆகணும்னு நம்பி களம் இறங்கறார். போராட்டமும் பிரமாதமாக நடக்குது. ஆனால் பெரிசா வெற்றி ஒண்ணும் கிடைக்கலை. அதனால அரசியலுக்கு அரசியல் தான் பதில்னு முடிவு பண்ணி தனது பூப்பாதையிலிருந்து விலகி சிங்கப் பாதையில் பயணிக்கிறார். பல மந்திரிங்க மேல அடுக்கடுக்கா ஊழல் புகார்களை அடுக்கி தடாலடி அரசியல் பண்றார். இதான் சாக்குன்னு அரசாங்கம் அவரை பசுத்தோல் போர்த்திய புலின்னு வர்ணிக்கறாங்க. அவர் மேலேயும் அவரைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் மேலேயும் பல புகார்களையும், வழக்குகளையும் போடறாங்க. ஆனால் அவர் அதையெல்லாம் பொருட்படுத்தாம போற பாதை முக்கியம் இல்லை, போய்ச் சேர்ற இடம் கோவிலா இருக்கணும்னு தீர்மானம் பண்ணித் தன் பயணத்தைத் தொடர்கிறார்.

ஒரு மசாலா சினிமாவுக்குத் தேவையான அனைத்து சமாச்சாரங்களையும் தன்னுள் அடக்கி வைச்சிருக்கற அர்விந்த் கெஜ்ரிவால் பற்றிய சிறுகுறிப்பு தான் மேலே சொன்னது. கண்டிப்பா இதை யாராச்சும் சினிமாவா எடுக்கத் தான் போறாங்க. நாம இப்பவே எடுப்போம்:

கிட்டத்தட்ட சிங்கம் மூன்றாம் பாகமாவே எடுக்கலாம். முதல் பாதியில சாந்தமா உண்ணாவிரதப் போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபடறார். ஆனால் அந்தப் போராட்டத்தின் போது அன்னா ஹசாரேவை (நாட்டாமை விஜய குமார் இல்லேன்னா அவங்கப்பா சிவகுமாரைப் போட்டுக்கலாம்) அரிவாளால் வெட்டிடறாங்க. உடனே அங்கேர்ந்து டாட்டா சுமோவில் பறந்து பறந்து எல்லாருக்கும் செக் வைக்கிறார். கடைசியில் அவர் சொன்ன கோரிக்கையை அரசாங்கம் ஏத்துக்குது. சூர்யா IG ஆயிடறார்.

விக்ரம்:

இந்தக் கதை இவருக்கொன்றும் புதுசில்லை. இருந்தாலும் எதாவது வித்யாசமா பண்ணி அசத்துவார். முதல் பாதியில் பேசிப்பேசி பொதுமக்களுக்கு உணர்ச்சியூட்டறார். அதனால வில்லன் கோஷ்டி இவர் நாக்கை அறுத்து ஊமையாக்கிடறாங்க (விக்ரம் இன்னும் ஊமை வேஷம் போடலை, புதுசா இருக்கும்). அதிலேர்ந்து எப்படி ரைஸ் ஆவுறார்னு மீதிக் கதை போகுது. தமிழ் சினிமாவில் முதல் முறையா சைகை மொழியில் பன்ச் டயலாக் அடிக்கப் போற பெருமை விக்ரமைத் தான் சேரும்.

விஜய்:

இவர் ஸ்டைல் வேற. உண்ணாவிரதப் போராட்டம் நடக்கிற இடத்துக்கு வர்ற பொது மக்களுக்கு இலவச தண்ணீர் விநியோகம் பண்ற ஒரு சாதாரண ஆள் தான் விஜய். ஆனால் போராட்டக் கமிட்டிக்குள்ளேயே பல கோல்மால் நடக்கறது தெரிய வருது. ஸோ, அந்த புல்லுருவிகளை மக்கள் முன்னாடி வெளிச்சம் போட்டுக் காட்டறதுக்குப் புறப்படறார். போராட்டக் கமிட்டித் தலைவர் பொண்ணுக்கு இவர் மேல காதல் வேற வந்துடுது. "நீ தாம்பா என்னிக்குமே நிரந்தரத் தலைவன்" அப்படின்னு ஓய்வு பெற்ற கரை வேட்டி நடிகர்களை விட்டு க்ளோசப்பில் வசனம் பேச வைக்கணும். அப்போ தான் அரசியல் ரூட்டுக்கு சரியா வரும்.

லோ பட்ஜெட் கிராமத்து ஸ்டைல்:

அதே ஜாதி வெறி பிடிச்ச காதல் கதை தான். பொண்ணு வீட்டுக்கு எதிர்லயே கூடாரம் போட்டு உண்ணாவிரதம் இருக்காரு ஹீரோ. ஹீரோயின் வீட்டுக்குள்ளேயே உண்ணா விரதம் இருக்காங்க. ஹீரோயினோட அப்பா என்னல்லாமோ பண்ணிப் பார்க்கறாரு, அவரால ஒரு ஆணியும் புடுங்க முடியலை. கடைசியில இன்னொரு பையனோட ஹீரோயினுக்குக் கல்யாணமும் பிக்ஸ் பண்றாங்க. நம்ம காதலைப் புரிஞ்சுக்காம ஜாதி வெறி பிடிச்சு அலையற இந்த ஆளுங்க யாருமே உயிரோட இருக்கக் கூடாதுன்னு முடிவு பண்ணி கல்யாண சாப்பாட்டுல விஷத்தைக் கலந்துடறாங்க. ஊரே சுடுகாடா மாறிடுது (அதிரடியான க்ளைமேக்ஸ்னு பேட்டி குடுக்க வசதியா இருக்கும்).ராமாநாதபுரம் பக்கத்துல நடந்த உண்மைக் கதைன்னு எக்ஸ்ட்ராவா ஒரு பிட்டைப் போட்டுக்கலாம் (யார் போய் பார்க்கப் போறாங்க?)

இது இயக்குனர் ராஜேஷ் மற்றும் நடிகர் தனுஷ் ஸ்டைல். ஹீரோயின் தன்னை விரும்பலைன்னு சொன்னதால அவர் வீட்டு முன்னாடி உண்ணாவிரதப் போராட்டம் இருக்கார் ஹீரோ (ஜீவா இல்லேன்னா தனுஷ்). அவருக்குத் துணையா அன்னா ஹசாரே கேரக்டர்ல சந்தானம் இல்லேன்னா விவேக் வர்றாங்க (அப்போ தான் நிறைய கருத்து சொல்ல முடியும்). எப்படி கெஜ்ரிவால் ஹசாரேவைக் கழட்டி விட்டுட்டாரோ, அது மாதிரி ஹீரோக்களும் இந்தக் காமெடியன்களை கழட்டி விட்டுடுவாங்க. "பசும்பால் பசுவிலேர்ந்து வருது, அப்போ லோக்பால் லோக்கிலேர்ந்து வருதா?", "திருவள்ளுவர் மூன்று பால் பத்தி எழுதியிருக்காரு, ஆனா இந்தப் பாலைப் பத்தி ஒண்ணும் சொல்லலையே, ஒரு வேளை அவுட் ஆப் சிலபசா இருக்குமோ?" - இப்படி மொக்கை வரிகள் படம் முழுக்க வருது. அனேகமா இந்தக் கதை தான் உண்மை நிகழ்வுகளோட மிகச் சரியா பொருந்துது.

Dhoni sacked, Virat named new Captain!!!

In few weeks from now, the new bunch of selectors will make their first selection for the Home Test Series to be played against England starting Nov 15, 2012. At this juncture, most of the players are busy honing their T20 skills in the Champions league. However some of them have expressed their interest to play in Ranji Trophy matches starting Nov 2, 2012, to warm up for the busy season ahead.

As everybody gear towards a new cricket season (by the way I still don’t know when the previous season ended) and an important one in Indian Cricket Calendar, it is time to rouse the selector in us to choose the best side that can represent India. How much our personal choice matches the national selection and subsequent nit picking has remained our tradition for years.

This time I pretty much know my personal selection will go South in comparison to national selection. Therefore I wish to divide Selection into two segments. The first would be my personal squad to represent India and second is the likely squad presented to us by the selectors. Obviously we all know selectors tend to do it politically correct without trying to hurt anybody in the hierarchy.

Here is my personal squad of 14 that includes 7 batsmen, 1 Wicketkeeper, 6 bowlers.

The overseas losses in England and Australia (Test and ODI’s), early exit in the Asia Cup and World T20, never ending dispute with Sehwag (Gambir included these days), dividing the team, bias towards certain sect of players has forced me to sack Dhoni from leadership.

In my preference for skipper, I would like to identify a candidate who is a sure starter in the side in all formats of the game with leadership abilities. I see Kohli fit the bill perfectly. If anybody think, he is not matured enough, I see him more than matured in the recent years both in attitude and cricket. I feel it is high time to offer him the top job in Indian Cricket and allow him to settle down. I’m not interested in separate captains for each format of the game at this juncture.

Patience to persist with Sehwag & Gambir has passed out and time has arrived to find new pair of openers for India. Who better than the latest sensation Unmukt Chand and Rahane (waiting in the wings for more than a year now)? Pujara, Tendulkar and Kohli take their position in the side by default. I wish to give Sehwag another life line in the form of middle order batsmen far he is only a made up opener all these years. I also wish to pass the opportunity to Yuvraj Singh first before exploring other prospects for a place in the middle order. However, I leave the decision to the captain to choose between Sehwag and Yuvraj for No.6. At this time, don’t see any other wicket keeper batsman capable than Dhoni to don the glove duty for India.

With regard to bowlers, I feel time has arrived to look beyond Zaheer Khan. Also Zaheer Khan has not done anything commending to hold on to his place. I would like to replace Zaheer Khan with Irfan Pathan, another deserving candidate from the same clan. That leaves Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma to fight between themselves for the role of second pacer. The reason for backing Pathan even in the XI ahead of both Yadav and Ishanth Sharma because the side is loaded with relatively in experienced batsman. So Irfan at No.8 would be very handy. Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha have not done anything bad to harm their places. Rather searching for nonexistent leg spinner, I wish to nurture young Harmeet Singh. The least his presence in the squad will be a learning curve.

I know the above is far from reality.

In the second segment, I wish to guess the squad that is likely to be presented to us by our national selectors.

This is our first selection. We understand Dhoni is not having greatest of time as skipper. However he has not done anything wrong at home to lose his power. We know Sehwag and Gambir are little off color. But they both are too good to be out of form for a long time. Also you have to understand they are champion cricketers and they deserve a benefit of doubt. With respect to the middle order Yuvraj Singh makes a comeback in place of Suresh Raina. All pace bowlers picked themselves automatically. We do know that Zaheer Khan is under lot of fire, but he still the best in business for India. We think time has arrived to bring Harbhajan Singh back to Test Cricket. We wish to confirm that all that talks about rift between Sehwag and Dhoni are only rumors. We will try and win this series comprehensively.

IPL teams are a pity...

Despite pitiable display (with the exemption of Delhi Daredevils), I guess the IPL teams could still get away unnoticed. After all, not many care to follow this tournament.

Dhoni don’t have Sehwag or Gambir to blame for Super Kings poor show. Obviously the boys in yellow are handpicked by Dhoni himself, so nobody is likely to carry any hidden agenda of denting his captaincy record. The failure of Super Kings presents Dhoni a wonderful opportunity to introspect his leadership abilities and tactical acumen. Only time will tell if he will review it himself or leave it to selectors. From my standpoint, I wish to see a new captain with new ideas for Team India in all formats. And no prize for correct guesses!!!

Gautam Gambir’s Knight Riders are a comical affair. The team that finished first in IPL is all set to finish last here. It is time the selectors show Gambir the doors in all formats of the game. When much talented players like Sehwag, Ganguly got axed during various times of their career, I wonder how Gambir is able to sustain his place in the national side. It is disappointing that nobody in power is taking note of his failures or willing to do anything about it.

Sachin Tendulkar has earned an opportunity to review his own survival in international cricket. By the way, it is boring to see Tendulkar failures. Thankfully Tendulkar himself acknowledged that the idea of retirement is definitely wobbling at the back of his head. So a failure against England is likely to bring curtains to Tendulkar Show soon. It is my gut feeling that Tendulkar will come up in flying colors in this home series against England and Australia. My hunch says Tendulkar will be the first player to complete 25 years of International Cricket. Again, I know how bad my hunches are.

The attitude Sehwag displayed in terms shot selection coupled with preserving his wicket in the game against Knight Riders, conveyed the message that he did not do justice in World T20 or before for India in the recent years. May be he is right. The War with Dhoni is not helping him. Don’t be surprised if Sehwag makes his presence felt in this CLT20. And thank God, Delhi Daredevils is led Jayawardene.

Virat Kohli should thank Royal Challengers for not qualifying in this event. A player who thoroughly deserves this break from cricket!!!

Considering the abundance of cricket played these days, Champions League appears a tiring experience for many involved. Most of them including players, media, fans etc., participate for rituals. At a time, when many question the existence of the tournament or even care to follow the tournament, a team like Auckland Aces perceived the event differently. Majority of the squad arrived 3 weeks prior to the commencement of the tournament. When the whole world was busy following the World T20, the Aces squad was getting acclimatized to the conditions in South Africa. If you carefully review, the squad is comprised of national discards, some players from wrong side of 30s, few fringe players and importantly no superstars. The Aces qualified for the main event emphatically. The team is now making good progress in the main course. So, Aces making it to the playoffs or even winning the title is not something that you can ignore. Again, if you don’t care about this event, it really does not matter to you what Aces do. The point is, when many tend to take their eyes off, there are some who try to cash on.

Bottom line: Ace is on.

Jaya quits, Dhoni stays...

The beauty about the World T20 is “it is not the same team again and again”. This time it is West Indies deservingly. I’m sure every cricket fan around the globe (except the Lankans) is extremely happy for West Indies to win this edition of World T20. Of course, they were the favorites; importantly they lived up to the reputation. With the title win, Darren Sammy turns into a recognized skipper in World Cricket. He proved, skippers don’t have to be charismatic, don’t have to be the highly talented player in the side, don’t have to be a cricketing acumen, but a motivated individual with common sense and loads of energy to keep his side intact until the goal is achieved. Salaam Saamy!!!

Now WI leaves a cue to England and probably the world too. If you bench your best player it is going to hurt your redemption. When you bring them back from exile, they make whole lot difference to the side.

Shifting to subcontinent saga, Mahela Jayawardene quit captaincy despite carrying his side to the finals of World T20. Sangakara quit captaincy after leading his side to the finals of World Cup in 2011. That says some individuals set the bar very high for captaincy. However, Dhoni touts he is the best to do the job even after losing 8 tests for India. Now you know where this post is directed to!!!

In my opinion, even if Jayawardene had won the title, I’m sure he would have relinquished the job from T20 format for Sri Lanka. He is 35 now. He has history of reluctance to lead Sri Lanka. He perceives himself as a stopgap measure to lead Sri Lanka until a candidate is identified. As Sri Lanka figured out the next captaincy material, Mathews had more than a year’s apprenticeship under Jayawaradene. So, Jayawaradene thinks it is the right time to handover the baton, the least in the shortest formats that will allow Mathews to mature in the role. So, Jayawardene quitting captaincy is not something intended to set the bar high. It is more a transition process and should not be used as a yardstick to evaluate Dhoni.

On the other hand, Dhoni has remained a willing personality for the leadership role. He does not think his time is up. He does not believe in shelf life for Captaincy. He still perceives he is the best, though the results portray otherwise. I’m sure no captain prefers poor records under his belt. So, all these defeats rankles him as badly as it rankles us. Either he is on a mission to rewrite the script or he understands that this is the best possible result than can be derived with this team. If the selectors & BCCI give the benefit of doubt to Dhoni, we will see drastic personnel changes (including in Test Cricket). If the selectors & BCCI give the benefit of doubt to the team, then we are likely to witness a new Captain for India in more than one format. As a follower of Indian Cricket, I would like to give the benefit of doubt to Dhoni first and allow him a free hand in selection for once. At the same time, I also wish to take away the captaincy from Dhoni in the shortest format, allowing India to groom new faces for places and power.

This CLT20 will be an ideal platform to evaluate Dhoni. If Dhoni’s Super Kings can win the CLT20 it will prove Dhoni has more to offer for Indian Cricket as skipper. Otherwise it is time to focus on transition phase for Captaincy in all formats.

India bows out of World T20

We can now peacefully follow the remaining part of the tournament without having to do any complicated math that in some way find a place for India in the Semi Finals of World T20.

I’ve been saying this for quiet sometime. There is no point in playing Dhoni, Sehwag and Gambir in the same side. There is too much dissent between them and it is hardly helping Team India. Well, we can always say these players are thorough professionals and they should be able to keep their political difference aside and perform proficiently for the country. Unfortunately this has not been happening for quiet sometime. It only looked like Sehwag and Gambir were waiting for one failure of Dhoni to latch on (starting from England debacle). From there on Dhoni’s response/attitude has been to keep both these players out of the squad/ XI. This is just a game of cat and mouse exhibited by our superstars instead of taking the opposition on the cricket field. As a result, we yet again experience the pain of seeing India evicted from the tournament earlier than expected despite being a strong unit on paper.

Though the names of Sehwag, Dhoni, Gambir are too big to be ignored in Test Cricket, the least India should have started with a young side under the stewardship of Kohli in this World T20.

Had India fielded a squad say

Rahane, Unmukt Chand, Kohli*, Rohit Sharma, Raina, Pujara, Rayudu, Bisla, Umesh Yadav, Parvinder Awana, Harmeet Singh, Ashwin, Irfan Pathan,  Pawan Negi

I don’t say the above squad would have won the tournament. The least the above squad would have delivered the same result the current squad did. This by itself is a big step forward in many aspects like...

Developing a new set of players,

Sending a strong message to the players involved in dissent,

Sending a message to the Dhoni for not producing results despite leading a strong side,

Sending message to Sehwag and Gambir that they are no longer a candidate for India Captaincy and so they better concentrate on their cricket no matter who lead them.

Wonder when our selectors can/will make such brave moves?

As a fan, I faithfully support the team that is wearing the Indian Jerseys. I wish the players and skipper reciprocates the faith by representing the nation sincerely, rather play politics in the middle!!!

Back to World T20, it is good to see Sri Lanka, West Indies, Australia and Pakistan qualifying for the Semi Finals. Sri Lanka, West Indies and Pakistan appear to be well balanced sides. Australia’s inadequacy was woefully exposed by Pakistan after the early exit of Shane Watson. So I don’t count on Australia to win the tournament. Sri Lanka appears to be well lead, while they still have to deal the threat of Pakistan and West Indies.

Bottom line: It is not Australia this time.

Super 8s produces super thrills...

After the New Zealand Vs Sri Lanka encounter in the opener of Super 8s that ended in super over, not many enthralling games were played at this stage. Oh yeah, the Pakistan Vs South Africa game was little eventful, but even that game tilted in Pakistan’s favor after DeVilliers bowled Kallis and Albie Morkel in tandem that witnessed Umar Gul’s onslaught.  After these two overs that resulted in 36 runs, it turned little too much for South Africa to recover. Wonder why DeVilliers failed to utilize Botha or even Duminy who could have easily bowled these two overs more economically which could have possibly sealed the game in favor of Proteas. Also Robin Pieterson’s 4 overs 1 maiden 15 runs 2 wickets, Botha’s 2 overs 1 maiden 10 runs 1 wicket and Duminy’s 2 overs for 5 runs and 1 wicket should have been the indicator for AB to prefer spinners ahead of medium pacers at this stage. Anyways, South Africa’s loss helped India’s situation for qualifying the Semi Finals of World T20.

Not to anyone surprise, Dhoni fielded Sehwag, benched Harbhajan (surprisingly) and Chawla, picked the medium pacer Balaji against Pakistan. After four hours of cricket, India won the game emphatically. Thanks to butter fingers of Pakistan that helped India to improve the NRR from a precarious negative 2.56 to negative .45. Pakistan is only marginally ahead of India now. Now both India and Pakistan require winning their last game against South Africa and Australia respectively with higher run rate over the other to qualify for the Semi Finals alongside Australia. Though both these sides are capable of beating the opposition, I wish to perceive the result differently. South Africa is too good a side to lose 3 games in a row. On the other hand, Australia has currently displayed the form that is capable of winning 3 games in a row. So between India and Pakistan whoever loses the match with inferior run rate will be virtually out of Semi Final race. I back India to qualify alongside Australia for the Semi Finals.

At the start, I never anticipated Australia to be the team that will make it to the Semi Finals stages. Reason being Australia did not have any recognized batsman outside Watson, Warner and Hussey to deal the spin deal of subcontinent. But again Australia has made it to this stage largely because opposition teams were not able to penetrate beyond Watson. Good for Australia and bad for oppositions. Let’s see if Watson saga continues all the way.

Though not many fascinating contests were played in Super 8s, the thrill was compensated by the movement of points table. Also the teams chasing the target were mostly found on the winning side. In most cases the wins came comfortable too.

As I was writing this post, New Zealand – West Indies contest produced another spectacle, with the game ending in super over and West Indies finished top. If ever games go to super over and West Indies are involved in that game, the odds are going to favor West Indies largely due to Gayle figure. Despite winning the game, West Indies is still not sure of Semi Finals birth. They are now dependent on Sri Lanka to beat England for their Semi Finals qualification. By the way, Sri Lanka has consistently upset India in the recent past (Tri series in Australia 2012, Asia Cup 2012) when India needed little help from the neighbors to qualify for the tournaments latter stages. So if we go by this logic, West Indies are unlikely to get that support from Sri Lanka. Also England is chasing the target. So, I won’t be surprised if England is the second team to qualify for the Semi Finals alongside Sri Lanka from Group A.
