the new stars in the Horizon!!!

So much happened in the last week, there is an aura of joy surrounding Indian Cricket.

The Indian Under -19 World Cup winning team are the new stars in the horizon. On the fast and bouncy surfaces of Australia, especially after the poor start against West Indies U-19, nobody would have backed these kids to go all the way. They surprised and they made us look back. Already Unmukt Chand is touted as the next Kohli and Harmeet Singh is hailed as the next Bedi in making. The Australian great Ian Chappell in his words of praise already mentioned that both these players are ready for International cricket. There were showers of eulogize from Akram too.

All Unmukt Chand, Baba Aparajith, Vijay Zol, Smit Patel, Harmeet Singh, Sandeep Sharma are wonderful talents to watch out for. Outside Unmukt and Harmeet, it is Baba Aparjith and Sandeep Sharma who impressed me personally. Baba’s bowling reminded Ashwin, while Sandeep Sharma’s accuracy in terms of line and length and ability to provide break thru as the situation demands are the biggest trait for making into higher grade cricket. By any means, one or two players from this team are more likely to break into the Indian side in any of the format in less than a year from now.

BCCI has already awarded 20 Lakh Rupees for each of the World Cup winning player. Some like Bedi has criticized the board for handing out huge sum to these kids at an early age. My friend Balaji who has similar opinion as Bedi, suggested for a scholarship program that should sponsor these kids to pursue the career of their choice in the future. I liked the idea. In any case, not all of them are going to have cricket as their profession. Because they were a part of World Cup winning side, every one of them is sure to try their hands on cricket in the immediate future. And this is also the most appropriate thing to do. With the system in place to fast track youngsters, some of them are likely to find a space in first class cricket of their respective region or fetch a contract in IPL team to say the least. But few years from now, we know exactly what happened to every one of them.

It annoys when people bash the young Indian cricketers. Most of their opinions are opinionated to believe the current era of youngsters don’t stand a chance compared to the greats like Dravid, Laxman and Tendulkar in Test Cricket. Some even go another notch to say, when the Dravids, Tendulkars and Laxmans have so much challenge dealing alien conditions, the youngsters will be a pity site. Some think the youngsters lack the work ethic and are largely spoiled by money and T20 cricket influence. To name few examples, a youngster like Rohit Sharma came to limelight in 2007 and unable to establish a spot in the side till date. A talent like Suresh Raina appears a joker in Test Cricket. There are always going to be these one off cricketers who are going to disappoint us. If you look at the other side, even the trio of Laxman, Dravid and Tendulkar whose mainstream is about playing Test Cricket were found wanting in England and Australia despite all those tons of experience. A youngster like Virat Kohli who was found wanting initially in Test Cricket did not disappoint in Australia. Pujara eased into the shoes of Dravid without a lot of fuss. These are the plus that we should see rather blowing the negatives out of proportion. If India could lose 8-0 after the famed batting line up, the youngsters cannot do any worse than that. By all means, Indian cricket is definitely in safe hands.

Coming back to Second Test commencing tomorrow, it will be a pity if Rahane/Badrinath did not replace Suresh Raina. I’m surprised as why everyone is hell bent to revive the Test career of Suresh Raina. He already has enough in his plate. He is already a game breaker for India in both T20 cricket and ODI formats and also a vital cog in the wheel of Chennai Super Kings. Is this not enough? Let us assume he breaks into the Test Arena too, and then do you really think he is a Sachin Tendulkar or Virendar Sehwag or Mahindra Singh Dhoni to pick and chose his series? Rather forcing him to become the test batsman, the choice should be left to the individual. The day Suresh Raina chose to skip an IPL season and prefers county cricket in England, it means he has made up his decision to become a Test Cricketer. At that point, nothing should prevent Raina from breaking into the Test Line Up. Until then feed the spot to the cricketer who has nothing in his plate.

Ruthless India plays SPIN MUSIC !!!

I know you must be laughing out loud as you read the Title “Ruthless India”. Even I do. Unfortunately this is a ruthless performance from Indians at backyard. Back in England, when India somehow managed to get to the lower middle order of England side, there will be a rock solid Prior to score a powerful half century (to say the least) followed by a cameo from Bresnan, Broad or Swann to floor India completely. Today when Kiwis thought they somehow penetrated the top order at 260/5, here came the Dhoni with an authoritative half century (73) followed by a little cameo from Ashwin (37) to take India to an imposing total of 437. In the coming days, we can only expect the firing to get big.

Again, what followed from the Kiwi batting line up was not any surprise (106/5). But what will be a big surprise is if Kiwis can go on to pile another 100 – 150 runs. The interesting aspect was, the medium pace of Zaheer (5) and Yadav (3) together bowled only 8 overs of the 42 overs bowled by Indians. And the part time bowling of Sehwag, Raina and Tendulkar contributed 5 overs in comparison to 8 overs of the mainstay. This is largely understandable considering the light was deteriorating and umpires would have offered the light to the batsman if medium pacers operated.

They call it Chin Music, we call it Spin Music here. If Spin Music is what likely to be played, India might as well go back to Azhar days, when only one medium pacer bowled (Prabhakar, Ganguly and Sachin used to share the new ball) and the remaining bowlers slot were taken by Kumble, Chauhan and Raju. I’m not suggesting anything of that sort. There is no way Chawla an able candidate ahead of Yadav or Ishant, but if we want to develop Chawla, this is the time.

Ashwin’s 3 wickets in removing half the Kiwi side should make it difficult for Harbhajan Singh. I don’t see a reason Ashwin not picking two more wickets in first innings and possibly 3 more in second to complete a match haul of 8 wickets the least. In any case, Ashwin is all set to finish with 15 wickets in this 2 Test series. The advantage Ashwin carries is his ability to grab wickets with the new ball like Kumble. Can’t fathom, how Harbhajan will make the cut for the England series unless Ashwin picks an injury or India decide to operate with 3 spinners of which 2 are off spinners.

In the days ahead, we are likely to have intense debate as who is the worst side, England or India?

From what we witness, it looks like England will eclipse India marginally to prove they are the worst. Both teams have proved they are lambs abroad (England in subcontinent, India in bouncy wickets). What surprised is England lost 2-0 to South Africa, which I doubt from India to lose against South Africa at home. Anyways, we will have our answers in the next few months.

Bottom line: Even if Kiwis fail to go past follow on score, I’m sure India will bat again only to entertain the paying public.

PS: I read news somewhere there is a rain forecast for Sunday and Monday. It won't be a surprise if India enforce follow on to derive result.

It is a brilliant and heartening performance from Pujara. He looked completely a different batsman compared to what we saw him against Australia couple of years ago. His posture is changed. He does not crouch like he used to. His back lift is reduced. Overall, he looks very poised at crease and plays the ball late only to make his batting look poetic. Mind you, he is not done yet with his batting. At the same time a well set Kohli disappointed by wasting such a wonderful start. When these two batsmen were going, it appeared as though they were set to bat all day for two days. I know I was ambitious when I made those imaginations. Unfortunately Kohli attempted to punch a ball that was away from the body only to be caught in the slips. A free wicket for the opposition. Then the way Raina got out today must be heartbreak for even Laxman after his early retirement call.

Unlucky Kiwis for not having the decision in their favor when a Chris Martin delivery brushed Pujara glove before landing on keepers hand before the end of play. I think the DRS issue will surface again only in vain.

At 307/5, if India managed to play until tea tomorrow or even an hour after lunch, a total of 450 pretty much on cards. Then the formality of Indian victory is likely to be completed by Day 4. More than the brilliant performance of Pujara, it is nice to see the team management taking the initiative to send Pujara at No.3 instead of Kohli. Though I wanted this to happen, I never expected Dhoni & Co to do it. I would have been happy if Dhoni preferred Badrinath ahead of Raina in the XI. Anyways, it is interesting to see if Raina will be picked for second test, if India or Raina don’t get to bat again in the second innings.

New Zealand were pretty much behind on the over rate today. In all they bowled only 87 overs despite the extra half hour of play. Their bowling chart included 31 overs of slow bowling between Jeetan Patel and Williamson and still did not suffice. There was an interesting discussion in the commentary regarding the slow over rate issue in general happening around the globe. Ravi Shastri suggested, the no of overs per day should be reduced to 84 overs (14 overs an hour). Simon Doull countered that the paying public is deprived 6 overs of game per day for their money. Doull recommended the bowling teams should be penalized by handing 10 extra runs to the opposition for every over not completed in the day. Sourav Ganguly said this was already tried in Ranji Trophy (unsuccessfully) were the batting teams were awarded extra runs based on their run rate (basically no of overs not completed in the day multiplied by batting team run rate). However, the batting teams used to take advantage of the rule and deliberately delayed the game so as the opposition team don’t bowl their quota of overs in the stipulated time. Some of the gimmicks adopted - make someone walk behind the side screen regularly to cause delay. The interesting point Sourav Ganguly mentioned, when teams rush to finish their quota of overs, they tend to bowl with non regular bowlers that take away the charm of the test match. This portion of commentary was very interesting. For the benefit of friends, who did not watch the match, thought I shall share this info.

Personally, I always like when the match goes for the extra length of time.

Laxman Disappoints!!!

I’m running low on choice of words as I mention “Laxman Disappoints”.  I’m sure his announcement is a shocker to many.

“Disappoints” does not mean I’m changing my stance. I still say, both Laxman and Dravid should have played the Australia tour announcing their retirements. I arrived at this conclusion only after watching their showing on the tour of West Indies in 2011. The strength of Laxman and Dravid is their ability to grind the opposition for hours. This was lacking on the tour of West Indies and what followed up in England was more of a confirmation of the ageing legs. After the debacle at Australia, it was little too much for taking even for the wisdom of a common cricket fan.

How does “Disappoint” make sense now?

Considering it would be too much for the budding careers to take off against Australia at Australia, it made sense when both Dravid and Laxman chose to play this series. Even here, Rohit Sharma should have debuted anywhere in the third or final test, especially when the kid had hit a purple patch going into the series and particularly when Dravid and Laxman were found wanting. If Dravid and Ganguly could do it 15 years ago, why can’t Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma repeat the feat now? Anyways, there is no point in brooding over what had happened.

Having not hung up the boots where it mattered or made sense, it is disappointing to see both these stalwarts choosing to bow off the field. It hardly convince the passionate cricket lovers who all opine, the legends deserve on field send off. Their sacrifice and contribution deserve farewell is more appropriate way to put it. As the stalwarts chose to bypass the on field honors, it makes it extremely humbling even for a cut throat critic who called their heads. With the off field retirement act, both Dravid and Laxman put the future of Indian Cricket ahead of their careers or personal desires. It is important Indian Cricket reciprocate the gesture by taking good decisions going forward.

I wish the trio of Dhoni, Gambir and Sehwag sit together and resolve their difference of opinion and take decisions for the greater good. It will be a good time to groom a new opener like Rahane to partner Gambir and get him ready before South Africa 2013. Rather Kohli take No.3 by default, it would not be a bad ploy to slot Pujara in this role, a cricketer more in the ranks of Dravid to grind the opposition and new ball. Tendulkar at his usual spot, Sehwag to follow and the No.6 going to one among Sharma/Raina/Yuvraj/Kaif/Badri/Rayudu would be the way to go.

All the rope Ashwin or Badrinath received may not be available anymore. They have to realize the new chairman of selectors is not going to be from Tamil Nadu and their spot will be based on what they deliver on the field.

It will be interesting to see how Indian Cricket matures after the Golden era. I've a feeling Indian youth will come out in flying colors. I sincerely wish the next generation don’t disappoint the greats.

South Africa Vs England

I think the whole of India will be celebrating the England’s 2-0 loss to South Africa. Yes, India doesn’t deserve to be No.1 simply for losing it 4-0 to England. Again, England did not justify the crown either as they lost to Pakistan 3-0, drew with Sri Lanka and lost  2-0 to South Africa at home.

Bottom line: No.1 side is not the side that can win the matches they can. No.1 side is the one that can win the matches they can’t. Either ways, Gary Kirsten looks to be the No.1 coach now.

ஹீரோயினுக்கும் ஹீரோ போல் படத்தை நகர்த்திச் செல்வதில் சரி சம உரிமை கொடுத்திருப்பது பாராட்டப் பட வேண்டிய விஷயம். சம்மர் சால்ட் அடிக்கும் கத்ரினாவுக்கு விசில் பறக்கிறது.

நாட்டைக் காப்பாற்றப் போராடுவதால் எங்கே தேசபக்தி வசனங்கள் நிறைய இருக்குமோ என்று பயப்படத் தேவையில்லை. சொல்லப் போனால் வசனங்கள் மிகக் குறைவு.





எந்த மொழிப் படமாக இருந்தாலும் ஆக்ஷன் ஹீரோ என்றால் அவர் என்ன வேண்டுமானாலும் செய்யலாம் என்பது எழுதப்படாத விதி போலும். இந்தப் படத்திலும் அதை செவ்வனே கடைபிடித்திருக்கிறார்கள். சல்லு தன் கோட்டைக் கழற்றி (ஆனால் சட்டை போட்டிருக்கிறார்) மின்சார ரயிலின் இணைப்புக் கம்பியை வளைத்து மின் இணைப்பைத் துண்டிக்கிறார் (என்ன எழுதியிருக்கேன்னு புரியலேன்னா படம் பாருங்க), நெருக்கடியான சந்துகளில் மாடிக்கு மாடி தாவுகிறார் (பார்ன் அல்டிமேட்டம் மாதிரி), இடுப்பில் குண்டடி பட்டாலும் டைவ் அடித்து ப்ளேனில் ஏறுகிறார்.

எல்லாப் படத்திலும் இவர் கதாப்பாத்திரம் ராஜஸ்தான் பின்னணியில் தான் இருக்கும். இந்தப் படமும் விதிவிலக்கல்ல.





இந்தப் படத்தை தமிழில் எடுப்பார்கள் என்று எனக்குத் தோன்றவில்லை. அப்படி யாராவது எடுத்து வெற்றி பெற்றால் அவர் நிஜமாகவே பெரிய தில்லாலங்கடி தான்.

The Special Hyderabadi Biriyani – Wristy & Willowy Wizard

1996 was a special year of producing cricketing stalwarts in world cricket. To earn a test cap during the nineties wasn’t so easy. The quality of cricket was match with style and class, precision and temperament.

If it was on June- 1996, for Rahul Dravid & Sourav Ganguly. Then Nov - 1996 goes to third stalwart of Indian Cricket – VVS (Very Very Special) Laxman - The great grand nephew of Dr. S Radhakrishnan, former President of India.

He made his international debut against the power packed Proteas side, with a match winning performance of 52 runs in the 2nd innings on a juicy wicket exploited by the seamers.

Consistency was never Laxman's forte in his early years, and despite becoming far more reliable in the last few years, he has generally reserved his best performances for crunch situations.

Three situations in which Laxman loves batting: when the team's in a crisis, against Australia, and in the second innings.

Love with Eden Gardens

Laxman has scored 5 centuries in 10 Kolkata Tests. No one apart from Donald Bradman (128.53 at the MCG) and Greg Chappell (111.77 at The Gabba) averages more at a venue where they have batted at least ten times, than Laxman at Eden (110.63).

Most of us remember his 281 against the mighty Aussies during the spring of 2001 at Eden Gardens, when he clobbered Steve Waugh's men all over the park. Shane Warne even tried to pitch his deliveries into the footmarks outside leg stump at the time when the pitch was taking significant turn, and to negate Laxman's free scoring. However, such was Laxman's play that he consistently drove the ball through long on for boundaries against the spin, something that is considered to be technically dangerous.

Even though the sublime 281 was turning point in his career, he learnt the art of winning matches even before that. His international debut, which I mentioned earlier, is a classic example.

So where did this all started?

Youth Career:

Laxman made his Under-19 debut for India against Australia in February 1994; Batting at six, he made 88* in his debut innings against a bowling attack that consisted of Brett Lee and Jason Gillespie, both of who were making their debuts too.

Domestic Circuit:

Laxman owes Hyderabad cricket a lot, and vice versa. It is not just the supple wrists he has inherited. He  says he learned to play well under pressure because of his early days in Hyderabad. He was their main batsman when Mohammad Azharuddin was away on India duty, and he says he learned to be responsible for the team. Hyderabad, in turn, gave him seniors he could look up to, and local competition he could relish.

He has been widely criticized as a slow runner between the wickets and he is one of the few players who have played 100 Tests but have never played in the Cricket World Cup.

But VVS is definitely a permanent trade mark term in cricket for now on. Very Very Special Laxman. He is too good a batsman under pressure against any team…

bye bye LAXMAN, bye bye SRIKANTH...

A week from now, India will be starting its campaign in whites at home soil against New Zealand. In other words an ideal preparatory ground for the series against England and Australia to follow. Already columnists are slamming the current squad selection from all corners. Though the squad selection deserves all the criticism, some of the U-turn moves are not surprising, especially when it happens to be the final selection from the current panel. It does not look unwise when the panel leave it to the future quadrant to build the future and do their final selection mostly per choice of the team management.

As much as we blame the selectors and chairman, it is not a bad idea to revisit their accomplishments. The last time in Vengsarkar’s rule, Ganguly’s career appear to end more abruptly. It is in Srikanth’s regime, Ganguly was able to find an honorary exit. This will be the first of many accolades to which they deserve a pat on their back. India went on to become No.1 Test side and the World Champions in ODI’s during their tenure. To their discredit, the selectors should be equally faulted for India losing it 8-0 and the No.1 status.

News has started surfacing that Laxman is contemplating his retirement at the end of the two test series. The colonel might have stampede Ganguly, it appears Srikanth is taking Laxman with him thru a more dignified route. Never mind, I’m just speculating a would-be coincidence. Though, the majority agree that Laxman is past his expiry date, it still a big void to fill the gloves that held those very special wrists. When Azhar was moved out, the cricket lovers were deprived the wrist artist at work. It was not an easy role to fill at all. Again, Laxman did not have a dream start to his international career. But once he got into groove, he took over the legacy from Azhar with equal style, grace and charm and did the job even more emphatically. If not for anything else, he will be missed dearly for his special second Innings skills. At this time, I’m not sure how many batsmen in the world have better second innings average ahead of VVS Laxman. The 167 Vs Australia in Sydney’99, the epic 281 Vs Australia at Calcutta in 2001, the fairy tale 73 Vs Australia at Mohali in 2010 (with a sore back that included a partnership of 81 with Ishant Sharma after the score card read 124/8) are some of the memorable innings that I personally regard the most. Glad, we will get to watch him play one last time. This last time will be really a last time considering there are no IPL contracts for the champion.

With Kohli cementing his spot, Pujara due to take over Dravid’s place, there is another place opening up with Laxman exit. Would it be a tossup among Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane and Suresh Raina? Will there be a revisit to Yuvraj Singh or Mohammad Kaif? Is there a possibility of shifting one of the openers to a middle order batsman? Is there a hope for veteran domestic talents like Badrinath or Rayudu? Is there a teen debut on cards? Surely, interesting days ahead of Indian Cricket.

Bottom line: Any case, time has arrived to find the next torch bearer.

Selection debates...

The National selectors announced the squads for the two Test series against New Zealand and the World T20 this week.

Though many of them are automatic choices, I wish to debate the selection of few that looks unconvincing.

Test Squad

After trying Suresh Raina in the two away series played against West Indies and England (which the south paw failed to capitalize), the selectors showed their intent to move on when they did not name him for the home series against West Indies and on tour of Australia. At this point, it appeared the spot for middle order will be a race between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma which the former grabbed handsomely in Australia. At the same time, one should only pity Rohit Sharma for not getting a single game on both these Test series. As Dravid vacated the scene, it is more logical the spot should go to Rohit Sharma for the amount of time he put on warming the bench for all these months. At the same time, no one can deny the performances of Pujara in the A Tour of West Indies and it is only fair if he overtakes the Rohit Sharma for a spot in the New Zealand Tests. But it is extremely unfair when the overlooked Suresh Raina gets another go ahead of untried Rohit Sharma. Average and poor performances in the ODI’s at Australia and Sri Lanka costs Rohit a spot in Tests, is unconvincing excuse.

Since Anil Kumble retired, the leg spinner slot is left open for a long time. Chawla and Mishra were the contenders, but both failed to convince the selectors or the public in the past few years. In between, Rahul Sharma made waves with IPL performances, but surely lacked the quality of a Test material. Rather compelled to field a leg spinner, it wouldn’t be bad ploy to give another chance to Harbhajan Singh. Either ways, Piyush Chawla’s performances in domestic circuit was not too compelling to name him in the Test Squad. I’m sure, leg spinner or off spinner, kiwis will have their share of problems in the turning subcontinent surfaces. The best that could have happened is Harbhajan picking a bag of wickets only to become the force he once used to be. It is time to break free of traditional mentality.

By any means, I’ve no surprises if India fields the following XI for the first test.

Gambir, Sehwag, Kohli, Tendulkar, Laxman, Pujara, Dhoni, Ashwin, Ojha, Yadav, Zaheer

T20 Squad

Finally, the selectors have decided to move away from Vinay Kumar. It is interesting to see Balaji back in reckoning ahead of Praveen Kumar. However, Balaji’s selection does not perplex me considering this is the last selection headed by Krish Srikanth.

லண்டன் ஒலிம்பிக்ஸ் பார்க்கச் சென்ற நம் நட்ச்சத்திரப் பட்டாளம் அனுப்பிய இறுதி ரிபோர்ட் இதோ:


சீனாவா, லண்டனா என்று வித்யாசம் தெரியாத அளவுக்கு எங்க பார்த்தாலும் ஒரே சப்பை மூக்கர்கள் மயம்.

மெடல் வாங்கலேன்னா ஜெயிலில் களி திங்க வேண்டியது தான் என்று சீன அரசாங்கம் தனது வீரர்களை ஒவ்வொரு ஒலிம்பிக்கின் போதும் மிரட்டி வருவதாகக் கேள்வி.

இவ்வளவு மக்கள் இருந்தும் இந்தியா ஏன் அதிக வீரர்களை அனுப்புவதில்லை என ஒரு வெளிநாட்டவர் எங்களைப் பார்த்துக் கேட்டார். எங்க ஊர் நகைக் கடையில் இதை விட அதிக தங்கமும் வெள்ளியும் செய்கூலி இல்லாமல் மிகக் குறைந்த சேதாரத்தில் கிடைப்பதால் எங்களுக்கு இந்த மெடல்களில் அவ்வளவாக நாட்டமில்லை என்று கூறி சமாளித்தோம். அது மட்டுமில்லை, எந்த விருதாக இருந்தாலும் நமக்கு அதை "வாங்கித்"தான் பழக்கம்.

எந்த நோக்கத்திற்காக ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டிகள் விளையாட ஆரம்பிச்சாங்களோ, அதுக்கு இன்னமும் தேவை இருக்கா? உலகத்தை ஆட்டிப் படைக்கிற சீனா, அமெரிக்கா மற்றும் சில குறிப்பிட்ட ஐரோப்பிய நாடுகள் தான் எப்பவும் முதல் பத்து இடங்களில் வர்றாங்க.

ஒலிம்பிக்கில் நிறைய மெடல்கள் ஜெயிக்கறதினால அந்த நாட்டுக்கு என்ன நன்மை கிடைக்கப் போகுது? இந்தியாவை விட சின்னச் சின்ன ஆப்பரிக்க நாடுகள் நிறைய ஜெயிக்கறாங்க. அவங்களுக்கெல்லாம் எதாச்சும் சொல்லிக்கற மாதிரி நன்மை நடந்திருக்கா? குறைந்த பட்சம் உலக வங்கி கிட்ட வாங்கின கடனையாச்சும் தள்ளுபடி பண்ணியிருக்காங்களா?





இந்தியா 50 பேரை அனுப்பி ஆறு மெடல்கள் வாங்கியுள்ளது. சீனா 400 பேரை அனுப்பி 88 மெடல்கள் வாங்கியுள்ளது. ஆனால் நம்மூரில் இந்த ஆறு பேருக்குக் கிடைத்த பாராட்டும் பணமுடிப்பும் அந்த 88 பேரில் எத்தனை பேருக்குக் கிடைக்கும் என்று தெரியவில்லை.

ஒலிம்பிக்கில் பங்கு பெற வேண்டி நமது வீரர்கள் அலுவலகம் அலுவலகமாக ஓடுகின்றனர். அங்கே அதிகாரிகள் அவர்களைப் டேபிளுக்குட் டேபிள் பந்தாடுகின்றனர். பார்மாலிடீஸ் என்ற பெயரில் பல தடைகளை அவர்கள் தாண்ட வேண்டியிருக்கிறது. இப்படி பங்கு பெறுவதற்கு முன்னரே ஒரு மினி ஒலிம்பிக்ஸ் விளையாடி சோர்ந்து போய் விடுவதால் ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டியில் பின் தங்கி விடுகின்றனர்.

சொந்த செலவில் லண்டன் சென்று வாருங்கள், நாங்கள் பிறகு பணம் தருகிறோம் என்று இந்திய ஒலிம்பிக் பெடரேஷன் பல திறமைசாலிகளை தட்டிக் கழித்ததில் கொஞ்சமும் நியாயமில்லை.

ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டியை இந்தியாவில் டிவியில் கூட பெருவாரியான மக்கள் பார்க்கவில்லை. என்ன செய்ய, தினசரி வாழ்க்கையே ஒரு தடகளமாகிவிட்ட நிலையில் இதை யார் பார்ப்பது?

"குண்டு" எறிதல் போட்டியில் பாகிஸ்தான் பங்கு கொள்ளாதது ஆச்சர்யமே. ஒரு வேளை அவர்களின் திறமை வேறு குண்டில் மட்டும் தானா?

அடுத்த முறை பளு தூக்கும் போட்டியில் நம்மூர் சத்யராஜ், அர்ஜுன் மற்றும் சரத்குமார் ஆகியோரை அவசியம் அனுப்ப வேண்டும். குஷ்பூ, நமிதாவை அலாக்காகத் தூக்குபவர்களுக்கு இதெல்லாம் தூசு!





 கட்டி உருளாத குறையாக சண்டை போட்ட டென்னிஸ் வீரர்கள் அனைவரும் புறமுதுகிட்டு ஓடி வந்ததில் இந்தியர்களுக்கு சந்தோஷமே. தப்பித் தவறி யாரவது ஒருத்தர் மெடல் வாங்கியிருந்தா அவ்ளோ தான், அவங்க போடற சீனுக்கு அளவே இருந்திருக்காது. ஒற்றுமையா வாழ்ந்தால் தான் நன்மைன்னு இப்பவாச்சும் புரிஞ்சிக்கிட்டீங்களா?

இந்திய அணியினருடன் நடந்து வந்த "திடீர்" லேடி, சானியா கையில் இந்தியக் கொடி இல்லாதது, நிறைய போட்டிகளில் இந்தியா வெற்றி என்று அறிவித்து விட்டு பிறகு அதை மாற்றி அறிவித்தது - இப்படி ஏகப்பட்ட பேஸ்புக் நிறைக்கும் சமாச்சாரங்கள்.

ஆபீசர் பதவி குடுத்தாத்தான் தொடர்ந்து ராணுவத்தில் இருப்பேன்னு மிரட்டும் விஜய் அவர்களே, ராணுவம் ஒரு சேவைப் பிரிவு. நீங்க மிரட்டினா உடனே பதவி குடுக்கறதுக்கு அது ஒண்ணும் தனியார் நிறுவனம் இல்லை. ரொம்ப சவுண்டு விடாதீங்க, அப்புறம் உங்க மேல தேச ஒழுங்கு நடவடிக்கைன்னு எதாவது கேசைப் போட்டு மும்பை ஜெயிலில் கசாப்போட கறி திங்க வெச்சுடுவாங்க நம்மாளுங்க.

கூடிய சீக்கிரம் இந்தியாவில் ஒலிம்பிக் நடக்க பிரகாசமான வாய்ப்புள்ளது. போட்டி நடத்துவதன் மூலம் எப்படி நிறைய சம்பாதிக்க முடியும் என்பதைப் பற்றி சுரேஷ் கல்மாடி நெடு நேரம் ஒலிம்பிக் அமைப்பாளர்களுடன் பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்ததாகவும் அவர் சொன்ன டிப்சைக் கேட்டு வெள்ளையர்கள் ஆச்சர்யமும் உற்சாகமும் அடைந்ததாக பேச்சு.






அரசாங்கமே, நேஷனல் கேம்ஸ்னு ஒரு போட்டி இருக்குது, ஞாபகம் இருக்கா? நியாயமா ரெண்டு வருஷத்துக்கு ஒரு தடவை நடக்கணும். தயவு செஞ்சு அதுக்கு முன்னுரிமை குடுங்க. அப்படியே கொஞ்சம் விளம்பரமும் குடுங்க. முடிஞ்சா பிசிசிஐ அதை தத்து எடுத்துக்கிட்டா நல்லாருக்கும். தோனி, சச்சின், விராட் மாதிரி ஆட்கள் நேஷனல் கேம்சுக்கு விளம்பரம் பண்ணினா நல்லாருக்கும். ஏழுமலையான் மனது வைப்பாரா? அதைப் பார்த்தாச்சும் மக்களுக்கு தடகளப் போட்டிகளின் மேல் கொஞ்சம் ஆர்வமும் விளம்பரதாரர்களுக்குக் கொஞ்சம் ஆசையும் வரட்டும்.

KP - A phenomenon devoid of discipline

“ECB please do not rob us all of KP” is the voice of the English cricket lovers. An English columnist says “KP is full of ego & selfishness” – I guess that is something which every star in every field of discipline is made of, with only very few exceptions.

ECB has been highly incompetent in getting things sorted with KP & to allow him perform for the crowd. Now I would say this is a failure from both the parties (player & the employer) for not able to accommodate the other party’s vision. All that is required is for the ECB to shed their ego and look at the issue in a straight manner – “KP is the best batsman in the country”. This is the reason why cricket administrators are elected from the lot of ex-cricketers & administrators. It is believed that they will be able to empathize with the situation and manage the egos of the players.

EGO – this is just an extension of the self confidence & the pride that an individual possesses. When you are so much more confident about your ability & know for a fact that not many can match you, you tend to take your pride beyond the limits. Now there is a fine line between being self confident & feeling you are the best. The latter brings about the effect of “EGO”.  The primary function of the administrators is to manage players’ motivation and to keep the unit united. I don’t mean to say that the players have to get away with their attitude towards the team and hide under the shadow of “management’s failure”. It is equally important from the players’ perspective that they behave at their best possible discipline and keep an eye on achieving the team’s goal.

Ricky Ponting to me is the worst of all in terms of EGO & bad discipline, but the ACB have managed to keep him at the world stage amidst the idiotism he carries with him. Ricky wouldn’t be playing international cricket if only for the generous backing from the ACB knowing he is “Super talented” among all the others around him. Now is there a lesson to be learnt here?? I am afraid “yes”. It is physics which underlines the technique of catching a ball – “If you go for it with hard hands, then you are actually making a scenario where 2 hard particles are travelling towards each other which will result in a spill or a drop catch”. KP situation is quite similar to this, where both the ECB & the player are not willing to give any space for the other party. This does not give any chance at all for the player to extend his career. Sad for the Cricketing fraternity because KP is probably the one player who, even the opponent team will admire while he is flowing.

Chris Gayle chapter was one other similar hard story where the player’s association was just not willing to let him have his space. At the end of it all the WICB asked Chris to ask for an apology and Chris replied to it in a press conference saying “For what?”. Now let’s look at it from the revenue part of the story, it is the players who earn the revenues for the Board and eventually the game itself on a broader picture. The only job of the administrators is to manage player’s expectations & to help them stay bereft of any grudge towards representing the nation. When you are a player who is most sought after and guess what you also have exposure to lot more cricketing avenues other than representing your country like IPL, BBL, SLPL, English county, Aus county and so on, you are most likely to be attracted to the latter when representing your country is not a fruitful option.

To me, after Sir Viv Richards & BCL if someone has shown the kind of swagger in confidence it has to be KP (without prejudice). They are more often than not, able to announce themselves to the situation and the opposition. Having read a lot about Sir Viv and seen a lot of BCL, I am sure they would have been of the same kind as KP & Gayle are, who want the Board to come after them and never the other way around. Gone are the kind of players like Sachin & Dravid who would rather want the money & the celebrity status last on the list. It is the generation of these extraordinary cricketers who look for “immediate gratification” in money & the status. These are the players who want to be in the lime light all the time & the world to look at them constantly. They are never far from having their feelings expressed to the world never mind the medium used for the purpose (Twitter, Shitter etc). With time, the administrators around the world must have been prepared to face this trend which was inevitable. Shiv Chanderpaul continued playing for the WI amidst the players’ dispute with the WICB. This is because he is from another generation of cricketers who wear the country’s badge no matter what the situation is.

Sir Alex Ferguson reflects on losing out Lucas Moura (the Brazilian prodigal talent) to PSG saying “It is really crazy that how money drives talent away from what would have been their best avenue to grow and mature”. This is from a man who always has believed “No individual is bigger than the club itself”. I am sure Sir Alex felt for the Brazilian boy who was unable to be wise. This is the underlying truth behind the sporting world around now. Even the great man himself has fallen prey to the ever growing foolishness that the players these days are driven into.

The lifestyle of the current generation is such that they lack patience and perseverance. Administrators have to stop expecting Chandrepauls, Sachins & Dravids. They should instead be prepared for the likes of Gayle & KP if they are to run this game.

Tough luck you administrators!!

தமிழ் சினிமாவில் முதன் முறையாக உச்சத்தின் படத்துக்கு ஆங்கில அனிமேஷன் படங்களைப் போல முழு நீள மெர்ச்சண்டைசிங் செய்யத் திட்டமிட்டுள்ளனர். படம் சம்பந்தப்பட்ட பொருட்கள், தின்பண்டங்கள், ஆடைகள் என அனைத்துத் தரப்பினரையும் கவரும் வண்ணம் திட்டம் போடப்பட்டுள்ளதாம். தமிழ் சினிமாவின் வியாபார நெருக்கடியே இதற்குக் காரணம் என்று சம்பந்தப்பட்டவர்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றனர்.


சாதனை நாயகன் இலங்கைத் தொடரிலிருந்து தானாகவே விலகிக் கொண்டதை ஒரு க்ரூப் பெரிய பிரச்சினையாக ஊதி குளிர் காய்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறது. இவர் ஆடவேண்டும், இவர் ஆடக் கூடாதென்று முடிவு செய்யவேண்டியது வாரியம் தானே தவிர இவர் அல்ல என்று உரக்கக் கூவி வருகின்றனர். ஆகாத மருமகள் உக்காந்தாலும் தப்பு நின்னாலும் தப்பு என்பது போல் இவர் ஆடினால் "இளையவர்களுக்கு வழி விடுவதில்லை" என்று குற்றம் சாட்டுகின்றனர், விலகினால் அதை வேறு விதமாக திரிக்கின்றனர்.


ஆங்கில சேனலின் சார்பாக ராணுவ வீரர்களை சந்திக்கும் நிகழ்ச்சி வரும் சுதந்திர தினத்தன்று ஒளிபரப்பாக உள்ளது. இந்த நிலையில் பேசியதை விட தனக்கு கூடுதல் பங்கு வேண்டுமென்று ஏழாம் நம்பர் அடம் பிடிப்பதாக தகவல். கேட்டால் இலங்கை சீரீஸ் வென்றதன் மூலம் சரிந்திருந்த மார்க்கெட் நிமிர்ந்து விட்டதென்று சவடால் பேசி வருகிறாராம். மேலிடத்திற்கு வேண்டப்பட்ட சேனல் என்பதால் பகைத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டாமென்று நலம் விரும்பிகள் அறிவுரை கூறி வருகின்றனர்.


இதுவும் ரேட் விஷயம் தான். யூனிவர்சல் ஹீரோவின் மெகாசைஸ் படம் ரிலீசுக்கு ரெடியாகியும் வெளிவராமல் இருப்பதற்குக் காரணம் ஹீரோ வினியோகஸ்த உரிமைக்கு நிர்ணயித்திருக்கும் விலை தான் என்கின்றனர் படத்தை வாங்க விரும்பியவர்கள். அவ்வை ஷண்முகி பட்ஜெட்டில் படம் எடுத்துவிட்டு அவதார் ரேஞ்சுக்கு விலை பேசுவது அநியாயம் என்று யாராவது அறிவுரை சொன்னால், தான் ஹாலிவுட்டில் படம் பண்ணப் போகும் தமிழன் என்று உதார் விடுகிறார் நம்மவர். அந்த பாழாப்போன ஆஸ்காரை இவருக்கு குடுத்துத் தொலைங்கப்பா!


தான் பார்மில் இல்லை என்று தெரிந்தும் வேண்டுமென்றே அனைத்து ஆட்டங்களிலும் ஆடவைத்ததாக ரோஹித வீரர் நெருங்கியவர்களிடம் புலம்பி வருகிறார். நோயிலிருந்து மீண்டு வந்த சிங்கத்தை டீமின் உள்ளே நுழைக்க இவரை பலிகடா ஆக்கிய விஷயம், பாவம் இவருக்குத் தெரியாது போலும் - உன் கதை முடியும் நேரமிது!!


"நவீன" காந்தி திடுதிப்பென்று உண்ணாவிரதத்தைக் கைவிட்டு அரசியலில் குதிக்கப் போவதாக அறிவித்ததில் அவரின் விசுவாசிகளுக்கு அவ்வளவாக விருப்பமில்லையாம். சாக்கடையில் இறங்காமல் சாக்கடையை சுத்தம் செய்ய முடியாது என்று தனக்குக் கொஞ்சம் தாமதாகத்தான் புரிந்ததாகவும் அதனால் தான் இந்த முடிவு என்றும் காந்தி அவர்களை சமாதானப் படுத்தி வருகிறார். மக்களின் துணையும் இல்லை, மீடியாவையும் பாதுகாப்பு என்ற பெயரில் அரசாங்கம் தடை செய்துவிட்ட நிலையில் பாவம் அவர் பட்டினி இருந்து என்ன லாபம்?


இலங்கை வாரியத்திற்கு சம்பாதித்துக் கொடுப்பதற்காக வலுக்கட்டாயமாக நடத்தப்பட்ட சமீபத்திய போட்டியில் கொஞ்சம் கூட கல்லா கட்டாதது எல்லோரையும் அதிர்ச்சிக்குள்ளாக்கியிருக்கிறது. டிக்கெட் விற்பனை, டிவி விளம்பர வருமானம் இரண்டுமே வரலாறு காணாத அளவுக்கு டல்லடித்து விட்டதால் வரவிருக்கும் T20 போட்டியை மிகவும் கவர்ச்சிகரமாக்கவேண்டுமென்று எல்லோருக்கும் ICC மறைமுக உத்தரவு போட்டுள்ளதாம்.


எல்லோரையும் கேலி பேசும் மீடியாவை மக்கள் கேலி பேசு வருவது தான் இன்றைய ஹாட் டாபிக். டெல்லி உண்ணாவிரதத்தையும் அஸ்ஸாம் இனக் கலவரத்தையும் எந்தத் தொலைக்காட்சியாவது காட்டினால் அவர்கள் உரிமம் ரத்து செய்யப்படும் என்றும் மீறினால் கறுப்புப் பண லிஸ்டில் அவர்கள் பெயர் சேர்க்கப்படும் என்றும் ஆளுங்கட்சி மிரட்டியதே இதற்குக் காரணம் என்கிறது மீடியா வட்டாரம். தகுந்த உரிமம் இல்லாமலும் கறுப்புப் பணத்தின் துணையுடனுமே பல சேனல்கள் வண்டி ஒட்டுவதால் வேறு வழியின்றி மூடிக் கொண்டு இருக்கின்றனர்.


முட்டாள் கானின் விழிப்புணர்வு நிகழ்ச்சி நிஜமாகவே பலருக்கு விழிப்புணர்வை ஏற்படுத்தியிருக்கிறதாம். குறிப்பாக தண்ணீர்ப் பிரச்சினை எபிசோடு அனைவரையும் தூக்கி வாரிப் போட்டிருக்கிறது. அதைவிட அந்த நிகழ்ச்சியில் பங்கு கொண்ட தன்னார்வ நிறுவனங்கள் மிகவும் சந்தோஷத்தில் உள்ளனராம். கானின் புண்ணியத்தில் நிதி குவிந்த வண்ணம் உள்ளதே இதற்குக் காரணமாம்.

Is England a laughing stock???

I’m sure every Indian cricket fan must be taking solace after England’s pounding to South Africa in the ongoing Test Series played in England. Ideally this is what we expected India to do a year ago!!! Now, hardly a year into the pole position, England already exhibited their inability to compound the turning wickets of subcontinent when they were washed up 3-0 against Pakistan. And now they are turning vulnerable against a quality opposition like South Africa in their own backyard. Interestingly, the much hailed world class spinner such as Swann is benched in place of inexperienced Finn in the second test. If this move is attributed to the pace and bounce of the track, I'm surprised how South Africa misread the wicket and fielded Imran Tahir in the playing XI for the second test. And, one failure in the first test, England did not have the patience to persist with Ravi Bopara. Eitherways, both moves baffle. Not sure Kumble at his prime or Warne during his best or Murali at his wittiest were ever dropped from the side sighting the nature of the track. If Bopara were to be replaced it should be under the expense of a bowler than a batsman, as it was England’s bowlers at fault  for picking only 2 wickets in the entire first test. In other words the quartet of Anderson, Broad, Bresnan and Swann were publicly humiliated by the likes of Smith, Amla and Kallis only to show if these bowlers were overrated.

With visible flaws in tactics and sense of panic exhibited by English Camp, the fate of this series is very much foreseeable. But, Cricket is a game of surprise and I wish England don’t go down without a fight even at their backyard.

It was only few days ago, I read an article somewhere that England floating a strategy to build sufficient breaks in the calendar of Andy Flower so as he spends quality time with his young family. This way he will stay rejuvenated and continue to provide long services for the betterment of English cricket. If ever England is dethroned from crown by South Africa, England find an early exit from the World T20 Championship, England continue the dismal show in the subcontinent wickets against India, not sure Andy Flower would even continue to enjoy the position he is in.

But, it is customary practice to find a scapegoat for failures. So no surprises if Strauss is replaced by Cook as national captain. Again, there is a good probability this might happen after the series against India more than immediately, far there will be no scapegoat then. I’m not being arrogant here. But all those noise made after thumping India were little too much in decibel. I wish teams learn to be humble in times of success.

Somewhere in the shores of Emerald Island, there is a high profile one day series played between India and Sri Lanka. India has won the series 3-1 with a game to go. Unfortunately the magnificence of this series is marred by untimely fixture of London Olympics.

What a shame to the world of cricket?
